27-11-06, 21:24 GMT+10#22 i was always under the assumption that the commodore cup boys all ran 253 and there all making around the 300-400hp mark. In fact i just checked and they are running 253 and i bet that quite a few of them would blow most street 308 away. Dunno how streetable one is but it show that there is power to be had out of them.

thats true, they're fairly basic mods too, yella terra heads, holley 465 i think, edelbrock performer.... tho do the same mods to a 308 and u make far more power and torque.. for the same money, and its not like you're saving any weight with the 253.. it has no advantages, people bash it for a good reason

30-11-06, 09:18 GMT+10#28 I've seen 202's with over 300hp, anythings possible if you spend the cash and wasting money on a 253 just isn't logical when you can get more power from a 308 and spend the same money.

30-11-06, 09:32 GMT+10#29 my first car was a 253 in a hz ute, (might explain my username.)
it had a holly 350 and with a gtech pro thing it was apparently good for a 17.5 1/4 mile. so yeah they really are a slow car and unless there is a specific reason you want one i wouldn't bother. maybe get the vk and convert it.
120kw's of fury it was if i remember correctly. when it was new anyway

haha lol. 308's are great. but.... a 202 DOES NOT eat a 253 LOL!

11-02-07, 18:02 GMT+10#31 I'm just waiting for someome to turbo one!
There is a guy on the street commodores forum with the tuffest one I've ever seen. His name is Wagone. If I remember right it makes in the vicinity of 460hp! Pretty impressive for a 253!!

i reckon u could make one go awesome... would be strong too and run cooler than the 308 which has thinner walls, itd be a good base for cooling but again.. the cost would be the same so if u turbo a 253 then u can turbo a 308 and the 308 is going to blow the 253 out of the water for the SAME cost so why would u choose a slower less performing option.

Thats pretty funny, I had that argument with a mate and proved that a 202 in the exact same car was faster, actually back then I had the 173 in my car and still bet it. Just face it, they are a lazy old engine, no torque, they make 120kw when new so a VN would kill one. But hey you can always do doughnuts on wet grass and make lots of noise.

well you'd be stupid to do this either way on a stock motor.. which means u gotta rip it out, and why u would spend around a grand machning a 253 block when u can get a 308 cheap from a wreckers and do the same makes no sense to me!

16-02-07, 14:16 GMT+10#38 Cause the 253 you know is better than just grabbing a cheapy 308 from the wrecker you nothing about.

you're gonna machine it either way so the once the block is back its gonna be better than new!

16-02-07, 21:14 GMT+10#40 I see both sides to the argument but . . .
Why build a 253? Well some people just have to be different! You know as well as I do that a boosted 253 will go better than most N/A 308's out there. So that's another reason to.
It would be interesting to see how a completely standard one would go with just a well sized turbo kit and some heavier valve springs!
