If that is indeed correct, why would two different letters mean the same thing and a single letter can mean different things?
ie S vs K, R = sand cast block = die cast block

The first letter descriptor is chosen to identify a style range and the second to delimit the type/application of the engine package.
R = 6 cylinder, closed deck.
B = Gasoline application using cast iron/nickle based block.
S = 4 cylinder, closed deck.
R= Gasoline application using sand-cast alloy based block.
K = 4 cylinder, closed deck.
A = Gaslone application using sand-cast iron based block.
Q = 4 cylinder, open deck.
R = Gaslone applcation using die-cast alloy based block.
Further to this, there are casting codes etched into the blocks that denote the series run and construction of the block. They show the different series castings and metalurgy used. I.e.: 53C, 54D, etc.

The RD version is diesel, so I guess D = diesel application
VG and VQ are both V6 engines, so I am not sure if Q is four cylinder open deck, but it might be just open deck ?
