This might seem a bit random, but does the tacho still work properly when it's missing?

What boost are you running and what sort of malpassi is it? I had a similar issue with the black top malpassi when on high boost as it was was massively increasing fuel pressure (over 60psi at 1 bar). Resetting the malpassi to 34psi at zero vacuum made more power and improved driveability. The problem went away when I refitted my standard fuel reg.........

MadVK Ive got the exact same problem as you. I discovered yesterday a leak between the throttle body and the plenum. Im gonna fix this today as well as replacing all my vacuum lines as i found a few dodgy ones *hopefully* it will be good after ive done all this.

woot! no more black smoke! and pulls heaps better! I also plumped up the coolant lines that go thru the throttle body. I can actually touch it now without copping a 3rd degree burn.

Thanks for that info mate. Going to look at the intake manifold/throttle body for leaks.

UPDATE: 1. Did the good old spray bottle test for intake leaks and could find jackall... 2. Replaced CAS with 2 known working items - same deal. 3. Changed the leads, car not "missing or surging" anymore... BUT I noticed the damn Malpassi was sitting on 25 PSI at idle. I adjusted it to 36 PSI and noticed that the car would blow a blue-ish smoke when revved... I backed it off to 30PSI and it was a little bit less smoke, then backed it back down to 25PSI again and it seemed to run like before. But, still blowing smoke under boost... Safe to say the fuel reg is in someway screwed? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I would say its pretty much screwed dude... you know anyone that can lend you one? or a stock one to test? at lest you know its got something to do with the fuel pressure... Is your car burning oil tho? hmm blue smoke just dont sound good thats all...

Yeah I know..... I freaked out when i saw it lol...It was getting dark though. Yeah im going to have to borrow one off my mate - which is ok. motor isnt using any oil, turbo is brand new, no oil in cooler pipes anywhere (throttle body or turbo side) 1 thing I did notice however is when the car is idling if I unscrew the oil filler cap on the rocker cover and take it out the revs drop, and it runs like crap....Is this normal for an RB30? I was thinking maybe my PCV system might be all hooked up wrong....

ahhh thats alright then that you got a mate with a spare one to try out as for taking the oil cap off and the rev's drop thats normal... its like when the system has a leak so its sucking in more air from the leak as well as thru the afm. Quote: I was thinking maybe my PCV system might be all hooked up wrong.... You just never know dude... i am guessing its the std one yeah? no catch can etc.. maybe even try a catch can and see how that goes if you dont ready have one. the calais we just sold use to blow abit of smoke when on boost but it had always been like that nothing it worry about so i was told it was not blue or anything like that so yeah but for a car making almost 120rwkws with just a 2.5inch catback on 5psi i think was pretty good for a stockie hehe but then again different turbo on it sopose to be a hiflow t3/t4 so yeah who knows Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

If you can get access to an air compressor, the reg is easy to test. Just dial up 15psi on the compressor regulator and hook it up to the fuel reg signal port. Pull the fuel pump relay out and put a wire from terminals 30 and 87 so the pumps run all the time. This will simulate the car running at 15psi boost. If the malpassi is a 1:1 ratio then the fuel pressure you read at 15psi boost should be 15psi more than what you have at 0 vacuum. e.g. idle (-10psi) = 35psi fuel pressure 0 vac (0psi) = 45psi boost (15psi) = 60psi

Thanks for the info mate. Once again proves that the Malpassi is just too much. took off the Malpassi, fitted a stock reg, and no smoke.... Thanks for all the replies. Mick
