19-01-06, 16:30 GMT+10#21 That's why i don't get why everyone whinges about 1400 for a detroit. it's $$$, but not in the long term, you can't break them and you can't wear them out...

yep! appears to have been the prob! funny that i have tried other tyres on it previously and didn't help then... but it works now so I'm not complaining!

20-01-06, 05:49 GMT+10#25 Detroit lockers are the key.
I got a spool in mine. And it loves it. I know how to drive so it only tramps when I dont have a choice (parking etc) general driving...
I found its cheaper.
Spool = $100 (Install myself, even a retard could do it)
28 spline billet axles - $200 each I think..
And havent had a drama since... Except tyres, but when your just running calais rims its not expensive.
Definitely going to put a detroit in though when I get canaried.

20-01-06, 06:01 GMT+10#26 $1400 for a DT! Yeesh!
I can get a Detroit-style centre for my 4WD landed from the US for less than $300, what's the go? Is this just a BW peculiarity?

20-01-06, 06:11 GMT+10#27 I put et streets on now, has pretty much stopped it now,
still does it halfway through first, think i need less tyre pressure
Oldgold, it is probally a borgy thing, it cost me more to builld one than do a 9 inch
31 spline axles are $500 more for a borgy
cheers

20-01-06, 06:24 GMT+10#28 I had a mini spool in my stroker VN.. it was a pain in the ass, 19" put a lot of load on the axles and I recon it was only a matter on time before I snapped one.
I've had two properly built LSD's now, and would never use anything else.. when shimmed up correctly and are nice and tight they are awesome, very predictable, no wrecking bushes, and a joy to drive every day it's driven.
A mini spool just ends up vibrating the older cars to bits.. and yeah come your first experience in the wet with a mini spool and a bit of hp, it's pretty crazy stuff.. for public saftey it's not a good idea, considering some of the younger blokes still lose it with just a heap of power and a open centre..

20-01-06, 10:14 GMT+10#29 hey guyz, this might be a bit of a stupid question but im not really that familiar with diffs, can someone please explain the detroit locker diff abit more?

20-01-06, 10:21 GMT+10#30 It locks like a spool when power is applied but disengages and acts like a single spinner with sedate driving. They are big dollars though.
I was quoted $1000 above the cost of a spool. $700 more than an LSD for my 9 inch conversion.

20-01-06, 10:36 GMT+10#31 thanx for that, but i guess it would be worth the money

20-01-06, 18:44 GMT+10#32 It all comes down to money. Detroit lockers are noisy when they engage and disengage. Mini spools are cheaper but you scrub tyres. If you want the ultimate go the Kaaz diff. They work on the principal of the harder you accelerate the more it locks up and vice versa. They are big bucks though.

20-01-06, 18:57 GMT+10#33 I had a very tight LSD in a VR V8 (non IRS) and it used to judder the wheels in low speed corners, like a spool does.... so what kind of copper can pick a spool? Just tell them you had the LSD rebuilt and its really tight as its new?
or police have really cracked down since I last had a Holden (back in 2000)

21-01-06, 07:17 GMT+10#34 hmmm... an lsd wont be so tight that it still chirps around like a spool. cops would defect you for it still. the point of an lsd is that it has limited slip so it wont chirp around corners.
edit: unless youre on the power

21-01-06, 15:35 GMT+10#35 you get alot more looks in a chirping car, and turning corners is alot more fun with the shudder.
But axle stress is bit annoying

21-01-06, 15:54 GMT+10#36 im sorry but what is Tramp? Is that vibration from the diff/rear end when the tyres are chirping? As my car (LSD) does that when i apply just enough power to nearly break traction through a gear but not quite enough to get it going smoothly.

21-01-06, 15:58 GMT+10#37 thats just the power getting down. through the box then into ur lsd as the ass end twists with the power. in a single legger as u put the power down if feels much different to a spool or lsd

22-01-06, 10:37 GMT+10#39 in the wet mine does as well, only when you give full lock at slow speeds though

23-01-06, 08:51 GMT+10#40 all been said but minispool's suck
probably the most annoying thing is the thousands of passengers who are like "wats that ?" when u go round a corner like the car is ****ed or something...
also snapping 3 axles in 9 months sucks ass...they're uncomfortable and wear out everything.
they're only good for being so predictable...
dont waste your time with a locked diff in a street car, it's a huge waste of money just waiting to happen.
J
p.s i did have my spool for 18 months with no drama's... it's when i put Bridgestone Potenza S-03's on the back that i did the 3 axles...
18's with good tyres and spools... not a good mix.
