Depends what you want from it - are you going to muck around with the engine, modify it or what? The VL is a much easier engine to play around with if you don't have much experience, and as has been said there are heaps of parts around and the RB30E was a really good engine. If you just want a daily driver you don't have to worry about, I'd go with the VS. Personally, I'm still waiting to find a VP II Calais with a 5sp Manual - rare as rocking horse sh*t.

If you go a VS any repairs you have to make will probably cost more than on your VL. Get a nice VL calais and you won't be sorry. You'll also get a nod from every other calais driver on the road, whereas you won't get the same respect from a VS. And the popup lights dude, there's nothing cooler :P And N/As aren't that gutless. Everyone bags em but I find there's enough power under my foot with the 5 speed to keep me entertained Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You like VL Calais alot? Get it. The VL is probably the most reliable 6-cylinder car built in 86-87 that is under 5 grand today. I only wanted a manual VL regardless of model and N/A or turbo, I just wanted a manual VL, and I was keen to look for one and I got it. Also, don't spend anything over MAX 10K for any VL, cuz over this price then you'd have more car options to get, over a VL.

Buy an auto and convert it. You'll have trouble finding a manual Calais VL. As far as I know, they were all auto, unless some were optioned manual or have since been converted to manual.
