you wont get a 454BB in there easily even with engine plates... they are are longer and wider and taller than a SB and I barley can get that in there comfortably!!! dont know about NT but in NSW you wont get a BB enginered..if your going for drag..have a look at the last SC..with that blck walky in it..hes running a 502...your best bet would be to get an aftermarket SB Block eg. dart or brodix. they have nice thick side walls and alt. deck heghts...then stroke the sh*t out of it!!! they are getting like 472ci out of them in the US...wouldnt suggest goin that big though!!! then if anyone (police, RTA) ask's its a 350 or even a 305 TPI block!!!!
Ha ha ... just for something different I have a 502BBC in my VL... Just for kicks I have decided to ad a turbo just to make sure it has enough grunt..
Well I suppose it will just be another POS.. VLT.....
thor- u will proberly have to post picks of your vl up cause most people just cant take your word for it, i know it pathatic but thats the way these guys/girls work not sayin i dont believe u, cause i do also is that your tunner it looks pretty smick love the tubs
its an absolute night mare. my mate fitted a 454 to a vn and regretted every 2nd of it, everything is custom, pipes, rack, steering column, starter, mounts etc etc. the money it would cost would be better off spent on a 400 chev in a vl.
In the current issue of Street Machine, there is an article about the production of a big block holden motor. Its basically a holden block, with chev internals. For $13,500 you can buy a 434ci short block and then just whack on a set of Vn heads and a harrop manifold.
if its big block power you are after, i would rather use this engine, instead of going through the hassles of fitting a Chev.
If it is not physically larger than a small block then it is not a big block...the difference between SB and BB is size not cubic capacity...in original terms a small block is anything smaller than the 0-350 and the 400ci chev block (the one that had problems) eg. good old 350 but can be bored out to huge cubic capacity nowadays and a big block is 401ci factory capacity and larger but made as small as 366ci. fom the factory eg. 454,502,632,802....they get really big however they have a physically larger block to cope with the bore and power. If you were to bore a small block to 600+ ci youd see the pistons through the side walls!!!! Big blocks are longer, wider, and taller and they have wider heads too!!
I guess what Im trying to say is if it was a big block you wouldnt be able to put VN heads on it.....but that sounds wicked!! Were gonna see some big cube holdens rolling around!!! PHAT!!!!

errr, OK then!
if u r gonna do it just go a small block, even better the money u will spend on the conversion would be better spent on modding the holden v8... im all for chevs, BUT basically for a commo.. u are looking at about $2000 to drop one in on on top of the engine price, then uve got engineering and rego possible problems e.t.c

Yea big blocks are physically bigger than a small block, but its quite easy to stroke out a small block to big block specs. At my work, we sell WORLD crate engines and one of the is a 454 small block. Its a 350, stroked to 454.
And with regards to these holden blocks, they have increased the bore to over 4inches, thats why the cubic capacity is so large. With a 4 1/4in bore and 4 1/2 stroke, the cubic capacity can go out to 510ci!!!
The blocks are built by Craig Bennett from Torque Power. Grab the current issue of Street Machine, with WAR-440 on the cover and the article is on pg 152. Its a good read

yup, sounds nuts but lets not forget that block is like 6grand!
I heard that sometimes the small block Chev sit a bit strange in a early commodore engine bays.. like up high..
I was looking at thay blue walky with the LS1.. it sits up very high.. like you can see the extractors pretty clearly..

Going by what written in the article a complete 434ci short block is $13,500. And for that price it includes block (of course), roller cam, roller lifters, Scat crank, H-beam rods, flat top pistons, timing cover, water pump, balancer and sump. And that isnt a bad price considering the amount of work that block has received.
After reading the article, i wanna get rid of my bottom end and buy the 434ci......ohh yeaaaaaa
And yea, Chevs sit abit high in a commodore engine bay, that's why the coversion kit actually lowers the subframe slightly to fit it in. From what a few ppl have said about the conversion, they werent too happy with it and some said it affects the way the car handles and feel on the road.

Good to hear your car is running ELA-RE, you must be having fun. I have heard the same thing with the chev conversions, If you look at the yellow vk in sm or sc, you can see it sits a little funny in the front. Still that is one of the best vk's I have seen.

Obviously some of you guys aint even driven a BBC...
The engine that I have is 502hp from the factory and the torque is awesome.. 1800rpm in top and it smokes the wheels..
Runs 11.0 times in a HQ 1 tonner in full street trim, pump gas, full exhaust, the lot. all with 3.5 diff gears and not reving it harder than 6000rpm, leaving the line at a soft 2800rpm (1.5 sec 60')
Driving it, there isnt a 308 is as drivable...18.5mPG with 4.44 diff gears (from my old 308 combo ((5200rpm converter))
In my book you cant go past the 500hp for 13k turnkey.. (308 cost that much just inparts)
So putting this engine into a Commodore is a bit of a battle, but as soon as the key is turned all the hard work will be forgotten!!!
Plus why bother to put a BBC in a Commodore???? Just cause I can... and **** it will be fun....And Just how many do you see with a BBC in them... DIFFERENT!!!
Plus the best words a old guy came into the shop to see my latest 308 engine... He turns to me and says : Hey Gav quit stuffing around with these little engines... Get a BIG *******... SO I did.. it was the best advice anyone has given me..
I have never looked back or regretted it... Just wished I had done it sooner..
If you want to be different, put a 426 hemi in a commodore......now THATS a real motor, it eats chevs for breakfast, lunch, dinner and the rest (Go Mopar Power!).
Now with the introduction of these big cube holden engines, the largest being 510ci, id pick a holden over a Chev. I work in a parts shop and know what different engines have to offer and the Holden gets my pick, well actually they come second, behind a Hemi

426 in a commodore oh yeah that would be sweet but seriously y would u bother with all the fabrication work to fit a big block when there are enough performance parts to make the 308 go hard

THOR..when you say street trim do you mean tyres aswell??? I dare say that you have about a snowflakes chance in hell of reelin of a 1.5sec 60' with street tyres in a ute period.... little loan leavin the line at 2800rpm!!!!! It just dont add up!!!! Please explain!!!
