27-04-05, 23:51 GMT+10#21 you all are kidding right?
have fun getting the thing into the engine bay,
PET are doing one on a vn (vn's vl's have similar engine bays as they're on the same chassis) you can't even get to the spark plugs on the side of the brake booster and stuff.
its not a at home job unless you really know what your doing..
all the pipes are pretty much custom made since the engine bays are smaller ($3000) for something descent since a 2.5' exhaust for ls1 is around $2500 for off the shelf twins from engine to tip, custom radiators are hell expensive, and brakes, tailshafts, and everything else that you don't think of, like holy ****, my clutch cable, accelerator cable, ect. ect is to bloody long now, they have to be modified, sumps need to be changed...
they just don't drop in..
a vl --> vlt conversion when done right is over $4000 and its all bolt up..

28-04-05, 00:09 GMT+10#22 What a hassle, this conversion would test the patience of the most dedicated engine swapper, for the money you could probably have a holden VS 5.7 motor and 6 speed and be just as happy.

28-04-05, 05:37 GMT+10#23 hmm alot of stuff has to be moved.. if your a good fabricater and know what your doing when it comes to this sort of conversion and have abit of time on your hands it could be done quite cheap as LS1's have now been around for a while.. id buy an older LS1 motor(VT/VX) get hold of one cheap and rebuilt it all fresh before you drop it in.. also wiring will be alittle bit of an issue.. but im sure now that a few people have done the conversion it would workout alright.
So yeah if you think your upto the task could be done without to much Dosh..
if it was in a say a VL exec.. if you put a good exhaust system onto it along with a good intake, LS1 edit and a couple of other little tweaks it would be a very fast street car..

28-04-05, 11:25 GMT+10#24 How about dropping an LS- engine into a Torana? ie LX, LH. Now that would be awesome!

www.castleauto.com.au (http://www.castleauto.com.au) <-- LS1 into vb-vl extractors, $600.
$2500 for an exhaust system?? dunno where u shop but its not a good place! maybe for full stainless steel but who cares to have that, just connect up them extractors to your current exhaust system
Radiator is easy just get your tanks swapped, u dont need custom.. cost about $100 for them to be removed and rewelded..
brakes what?? unless u track race it your standard brakes will do, if u have a high performance car u should have good brakes anyway, at least upgraded rotors and pads.
Space issues well thats another story.. im sure theres ways around it tho, even if u have to remove the booster altogether

29-04-05, 09:19 GMT+10#28 im with mark and wardy 15 grand witrhout a problem
engine - $4500
box - $2000
engine loom - $750
reprogrammed comp - $700 new - $400 changeover
starter - $320
trans cross member - $150
engine mounts - $170
reversed sump - $800
radiator - $300 (modified i dunno where u got 100 from but give me the number please)
tailshaft - $320
exhaust - $at least 2000 (hook it up to your old exhaust?? wouldnt work seeing as your exhaust would have to pulled apart and changed as it isnt goin to just bolt up)
aircon - $350
then you have the other little prices no one includes when making a price list for a project then labour costs
P.S the above prices are for a gen 3 into an EH sedan

29-04-05, 11:04 GMT+10#29 i know of a bloke who had a gen 3 six speed in a vl and got out of that easily under ten grand i dont know where you are all planning to buy your motor and gearboxes from but where ever youve priced the motor and gear box from go back and slap em for me! pickles auctions sold a vx clubbie with a huge hit up the #*$ for 2 hundred bucks because nobody wanted to bother with it yet the motor and box were fine
just a couple of months back surely if you were thinking of spending thousands on the conversion you would think a little out side the square as to where to get the gear from

agree with most of your prices.. tho i reckon u can do better than $800 on the sump mod!
but back to the exhaust, i really dunno where u guys shop! i paid $1180 for the full exhaust on my VQ with 1.75" pacemaker extractors with ybranch (that was about $680 alone) plus the pipes and mufflers (used stock cats) there is no way u would need to spend more than that, i even got a better quote than that to do it but i went with this one coz i didnt have to wait.

30-04-05, 08:30 GMT+10#34 I reckon I could do a conversion for cheaper than 15 grand,...2 G's on an exhaust...I would just use the one I have now..its all there, just a bit of modding and it will be sweet.
I would do pretty much all the work myself, excluding wiring. considering I would sell my motor and box, and all the other parts I wouldnt need to re-coup some of the cost, it certainly brings the figrue down to a reasonable level. Things like brakes have already been done and mates in the industry can help out with fabrication and electrical.
So to the average joe bloe it isnt to out of reach, just depends how good you are with a spanner, and the ability to solve problems cost effectivley.
Just my 2c.

30-04-05, 12:47 GMT+10#35 ppl have been puttin chevs into commodores for years and VT's shared both a holden v8 and a ls1 so its obviously not that hard to do.
As mentioned, if u are a cheque book racer than yeah itll cost a lot, if u know what you're doing i dont see how its gonna cost any more than putting a chev in, which isnt too expensive... and at least the ls1 doesnt have a dizzy.
