they were under 5L to comply with group A rules :P
Technically they were not made 4.9L to comply with Group A rules. They were made 4.9L to take advantage of the rules. The rules stated that if the engine was 5.0L to ?.?L (more than 5.0L) it had to be a certain amount of weight. By destroking the engine to 4.9L The weight it had to be was a lesser amount. Less weight = More performance.

well technically that would have been a huge weight saving. not
they were complying with the rules, to take advantage of the rules, not one or the other. Who would want to keep it as 5L with a greater overall weight. :-)
get outta here they where ****ing 600 litres!!!! lol nah your right 4.9 litres is what the 304ci's are, ring holden and they'll tell you. 308ci's are 5.0 litres. Personally id rather an injected 304 to a carby 308 anyday :P

the difference between 304 and 308 is only a few cc's isnt it? well thats what ive heard neway. Same litres but difference amount of cc
sorry phill that just made me laugh, cheers!

why would a 304 have to haev more compression than a 308... pretty sure most vl v8's (i.e. standard carby models) had a lower compression ratio due to the introduction of unleaded petrol.
its optional... "LV2" = Big valves, high compression..
the other 304 was injected.. im guessing it had normal valves and less compression.. was my point

a 304 carbi (304 VK/L) compared to the older 308, and the what will win? noooo go the 308 any day. The only 304s to outdo the 308s were the EFI engines which ran higher compression and better fuel system (providing your not into f*cking around with carbis *sigh*)
ps: unless the carbi is an edelbrock performer series (mechanical secondary) :P
as an aside:
the difference b/w a 308 and a 304 is around 1% of total volume. Considering these engines were barely making 120ish kw (VK/VL era, carby ones anyhow)... I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference on the road.
The VL engine would have run with less compression because it's set up for unleaded petrol which has lower octane content than leaded petrol, pretty sure I read somewhere that the VK's had 8.8:1 and the VL's had 8.5:1.
I haven't seen anywhere mention different power output of standard(i.e. not injected) vl v8's... they all made 122kw @ the fly.
MadVK308:
The original VK's had a 308, they had a midlife update that changed to the 304.
As has been stated... the 4cc's that the engine size was reduced allowed a reduction in weight of the car for racing. Apparently the weight of the car was allowed to be reduced by 75kg. About a 1% reduction in engine performance, for a (guesstimating 1300kg car) 6.1% reduction in weight (less weight = better handling/braking/fuel consumption etc etc etc) so it made a noticeable difference.
What was it they used to say... "Win on sunday... sell on monday", so it would have been a worthwhile exercise for holden (they had to sell 5000 cars of the specification used for racing... i.e. 304ci).
What a rant lol
LOL This thread has so much **** in it.. I think I read the same post over 10 times.. haha.
If someone else has said something, why the **** do you repeat it?? bloody parrots.
Sqwark!
