Would make a nice track car, fully stripped with the engine modded for high revs, she'd be quick, but i think for the $$$ you could make up the weight difference and balance modifiying the Rb30 or drop in a RB25DET.
But if you're looking for something different then yeah, go for it!
Only way i would do it is if the SR was given to me...
meggala on performanceforums put an sr20 into his r32. he picked this over the rb20 because of weight distribution. apparently it did make a good difference.
everyone has valid points though..

He then removed it and fitted an RB20 because it was a slug.

Sometime next year I'll be purchasing a SR20DET and 5 speed (probably from an S14 200sx) to put into my currently auto and RB30E VL. Reasons for doing this are pretty simple, to reduce weight, to better the weight distribution of the vehicle, to make it go faster (!), and because noone seems to have done this before!
Anyway, obvious things I will need will be the engine, ecu, and gearbox, clutch pedal and other parts necessary to make a clutch operate, a SR20DET engine crossmember and gearbox crossmember (hopefully these would fit with minimal modification, does anyone know if a R31 engine crossmember and VL crossmember are interchangable??), new springs for the front when theres wayyyy less weight over them ... among other sure to be encountered problems usually encountered when attempting an engine conversion!
Tell me what you guys think... cheers!
r u retarded or something cause thats the stupidist thing ive heard yet on this forum
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

imho if u want to turbo a vl either rb25 or rb30, dont settle for less
I have to agree with the DONT DO IT PART, SR20's arent that great unless you go to alot of work building the engine and correct turbo
As for you slagging off a RB20DET, with a HKS GT2530 or 2535 and ditch the 3.45 gears for 4.11's. 250RWKW is easily achiveable!!
The 4.11 makes one hell of a difference compared to the stock 3.45 gears
I came up with this idea like a year ago and people laughed at me. Well anyway the only reason to do this that I can see is for a track/drift car. If its for the street I'd go with an RB engine, even the RB20.
Ive Driven a lightly modified SR20 S13 (fmic, 3" exhaust, boost etc) it went pretty good, very tail happy but didnt have the grunt feel or torque to put you back in your seat.
I own a Silvia and a VL. Silvia have a good chassis for corners and an excellent suspension base... VL has a supieror streetabiltiy to it becuase of the whopping low down torque you get and combined with the turbo it has a great midrange to top end.
I have both because they both do different things. VL is good for straight line drag stuff, Silvia is great for drifting and track duties. Both cars have their advantages and disadvantages.
I would not put an SR20 into a VL purely because of the cost involved. A cheap thrashed SR20 goes for about 3500 in a half cut thats been sitting for 6 months. Add the expensive engineers costs and trying to get the thing through Regancy. If you want to really track it, then you must do an engine rebuild because the standard motor will blow in no time. About 3 motors have blown and been rebuilt that i know of at calder park drifting since they started. Racing puts a lot of strain the parts as they are not designed to be cycled or thrashed hard for long periods of time. Some parts are overengineered because they provide logeivity but other parts fail because of excessive loading or it could have been a dodgy motor from factory.
At the end of the day, do what you like as its your money, but if you look at it from a financial point of view and the increasing headaches you will encounter - its not worth it.
Why would you want to go from an engine with potential to an engine without potential? It's not hard to do a turbo conversion on your na rb30 as compared to shoehorning an sr20, and it'll probaly cheaper with better preformance gains. It's up to you though, would be something different, but no street weapon.

Mate get the SR20DET out the S15 bit more exspensive but its newer and has a better turbocharger and maybe some other things.
Thinking of putting an SR20DET in a VL i think would be Sweet you will have loads of extra room in the engine bay at the front and the weight difference would have to be lighter then a RB series engine 4 sure.
Now your diff ratio will have to be somthin way better then the VLT Ratio and im guessing your running the SR20DET gearbox?? s15 has a 6 speed S14 has a 5 speed which 1?
i would go 6 speed just cause its newer but i have heard of i think 2nd giving in at high revs im sure its this box i was getting told about i could be wrong.
really mate what have you got to lose i rather a SR20 or an RB20 but i rather a RB25 over both but i seen more Rb20's in VL's then SR20's why is that cause its a 6 Cyl any 1 would tell u to get every lil bit of power out of a RB20DET u gotta rev it RB25 is different i havnet driven a SR20DET so i cant really tell u.
but im sure it would rev alot easier then the Rb20.
man just do it i seen a 300zx in japan Running a SR20 and they are a 1490kg car i know it was set up for drift but still would have some power.
For the cost vs performance quotient, why would you bother?
For the same money, spend it on an RB30et transplant and good suspension.
If you're after honest opinions, and let's face it, this is the place to get them, I reckon it's a waste of time.
If you're doing it to be different and save weight, buy a lexus V8 and vortech supercharger and throw that in.
