i have a similar problem right now. I can hear a tapping/popping noise. I know my lifters are noisy, but i believe the manifold gasket is buggered around cylinder 3. I rang up for a quote to replace this and was told $265 because they replace all the studs at the same time. sounds too damn expensive to me...

ah bad luck mate, get a few quotes might be best option, but i think if studs break it cost a ****load to get new ones so its probably best u get it done like that

Ring around a few places, you may get a cheaper quote, and if you dont already have extractors it may be more economical to do that at the same time. Play price wars with a few places over the phone and ring back and get them to beat it. If you know a mechanic that wants to give you a hand at his workshop, you may be let off cheaper that way, when i changed mine on my old n/a i did most of the work, broke 6 studs and paid him to remove them.$50. some people prefer to weld a nut on and extract it that way, but this guy has some SNAP-ON screw extractors(work heaps better than normal ezi-outs) and ripped em out in no time. He suggested to me to replace all studs which cost around $20 with nuts and washers. So long as your cat and exhaust are in tact, you dont really need to get new ones unless you can afford it, It is a pretty easy job, just a bit time consuming, but looks after the pocket.

If you were to buy new extractors, gaskets should come with it too...
