Anyones thoughts on this question?
My understanding was that the old monaro prices have gone up because they have become 30 years old and thus 'classic'...
Applying the same logic to VLs, your going to have to wait until at least 2016 for a price rise...
I doubt they will ever be too "classic" just because there's so many out there.
Particularly with calais turbo's there'll be abother 5+ years where the prices don't change too much.

If anything I recon the pieces of VLCT's are dropping.
Lets face it - with so many crashes of VLCT's every backyard barry is doing the "el dodge-master" and swapping parts from a wreak into a VL exec
And the VLC/T wasnt like it was rare or anything - a VL is more like a clitoris, every cuunts got one lol (not meaning to offend anyone) Then again maybe a 100% same as factory VLCT might increase in value over time - then its more of a collectors car then a hoons trash box lol.
Once you start getting into the VL Group A's, the director models and such... those type of VL's will more then most likely increase in value as time goes on - but in the same way, only if they remain in prefect condition.
My 2c's.
Cheers,
Daz

Yes I was very confussed at the start of the year as there was 2-3 members on here saying how factory VLCT are and were getting sold for 12k and above. I think they were gold members to. But anyway looking around majority of factory VLCT being sold on here, in the trading post, ebay ect were and still are around the 8-8.5k mark

and yes it aint hard to change the identity of a non factory VLT to a factory VLT. No matter what the law says. There are people out there that do it, but then again 1-2 people bury there heads up there asses saying it dosent happen.

There not like GTHO's, GTR-XU1's and Walkinshaws that are easy hunted down for the factory to now.

I guess things are a little different over here in NZ , with the fact that any VL model that was fitted with the turbo motor as factory, are very hard to find and there are only a handfull that where sold as NZ new ( which I am lucky to own one ) the rest where inported from ozzy.
The fact that they are so hard to come across over here is good because you just can't beat the look you get as you boost pass some guy in his turbo skyline or evo over here and he can't believe his ears as the turbo spools up and the blow off valve goes pssst as you pass them.
Jap imports are so easy to come across here in NZ as we don't have the same ristrictions that you guys in ozzy have.
My VL TURBO makes me the WOLF in the ever increasing flock of jap sheep on NZ roads.
They'll be like any other 30 year old car with reasonable performance is now in 15 years time, ie for an immaculate, well looked after, non-modified VLT you will still pay top dollar. For a badged version (non-modified again) you could probably name your price by then (for LE, Director, Sport, SS Group A and the like).
Has anyone looked at the asking price of so-called good original V8 Torana hatchbacks recently ? 10-20K is still the asking price and there's a lot of rubbish out there. Remember the first Brock-modded Commodore ? How many have you seen lately ?
Certainly not a wise investment, and you won't get a huge return (if any) on your investment, even after 20 years, but the curiosity value of even something like an immaculate HX GTS (not everyones cup of tea I know) is hard to go past for some and you'll always find someone who just wants one.
Mods are worth less as your car ages though so if you're thinking of hanging on to your intercooled 10-second beast with holes drilled everywhere in your custom dash and interior for posterity, then forget it. Remember all those tarted up panel vans from the eighties (oh, forgot, most of you were in nappies ) ? You can't give one away these days as modding trends come and go.

It's hard to find one with low k's and they all look fairly stupid?

I guess VL turbos will go through several stages of evolution just like the FJ Holden did.
First they are a new modern car, then they become a used car and are cheap enough for the young guys to hot them up. They become a bit infamous, and police targets for road-worthies, then they all start to die or get written off, or just rust away.
Finally maybe fifty years later they become a collectors car, with a mint restored example worth big dollars. But would you pay maybe thirty grand for a car with bench plastic seat, rubber floor mat, three speed gearbox with column change, drum brakes. 41 Kw engine (I am not kidding) and handling to match ? Probably not. But some people collect these cars, and they are now pretty rare.
Perhaps by 2030 the VL will be a collectors car too, who knows. But by then there will be very few of them still running.
There have been a few fairly collectible Australian cars, but none of them have the performance or comfort of a new car. Something like a restored Torana XU1 comes to mind. An absolute ball tearer of a car in it's day, but now sadly pretty slow compared to something like a stock factory Magna. Thirty years of technology makes a big difference.
Maybe in forty years the average mass produced family car will have a 400Kw engine, and the poor old VLT will look pretty sick. You will be able to tell your grand kids how you had one of those yourself, and the kid will just laugh at you.
Well is has been 17 Years now,
there was not far over 100,000 of the Cars made i dont think, and our population is now in the Millions,
Every Day our Calais Brothers are being Written off, Wrapped around Poles and rusting away...
The Cost is factored from Supply and Demand, if less VL's are around then the Price of the ones left go up. if Demand goes up, then the Price goes up...
Many VL drivers have shot ourselfs in the foot, by practicaly Giving the cars away...
If your mate only spent $1000 for a car, your going to expect the same..
we need more people that are not in for the quick sale, if plently of us decide to sell at $10,000 in stead of $5,000 then the price will a-fix to that, and if they want the car, and will look after it... then they will save up and buy it, even on the dole you can spend $10G for a car if you pay it off over 2 years...
allso, just say you had the last 5 vlt's left in the world, valued at 50 grand each, If you did blow 4 of them up, then the last one would be worth one Mill, cause it is the very Last one left... (Prices not actual) but you get the point, the last of somthing Is worth more then the Last 2 of somthing Combined
Yeah, it's the same with for example, the old original Ford Mustangs. If you had bought one thirty years ago and just kept it under cover without driving it, today it would be worth a mint to a restorer or collector. But on the other hand if you bought a good VL and stored it, you would be an old man by the time it was really worth a lot.
If you invested the same money in a business, or other enterprise, you will do a lot better. There are people that invest in antiques, or art objects, but cars are a specialist field. Who could afford to keep maybe ten cars in a garage for thirty years before selling them.
I mean if you knew a VL was going to be worth twenty grand in twenty years, would you bother ? What if it was worth fifty grand in forty years. Or a hundred grand in seventy years ?? At what point would you sell it ?

Ok dude look at the cars in the 4 sales section on this forum that are 4 sale for 9-10k, have a look and see how long they have been 4 sale for. A VLCT for 10k would wanna be a very good example, so saying all should be for around that price would mean a very sloooow turn over for VL's.
Supply and Demand for these cars just arnt there.

Yeah the ones around 8-8.5 K mark been thrashed to the sh1thouse Very rare to find a good factory VLT for that price,The really looked after VLT's still go for 10K over look more closer dude and you will see,BTW i have talked to few mechanic friend's about changing built plates on non factory VLT's they just laughed and said no way you can do that, and plus its ilegal to do it.
So instead of calling me a dreamer on here and thinking you know everything about VL's on this forum i think you better take a closer look at yourself hey?

But anyway its big business, look at Harley's they get flogged and change identity over night. I'm sorry if you dont believe it happens but in the real world it happens and it happens daily.
VLCT's that go for 8k are at the bottom of the range, yes very correct however thats the price majority of the people on this forum are prepared to pay. Hence the length of time it takes the cars in the higher end of the market 10k plus take so long to sell.
If people on here have the impression that I know more then just a little about VL's then
PEOPLE I KNOW **** ALL ABOUT VL'S. But I do listen to a lot of people with different views and tastes in cars, people that buy cars for investment, guys that are and have built rods, street machines and standard cars from the ground up. But NO I DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT VL'S. But I do know VL Turbo's will not increase in Capital Value in the near future. And near future I mean 15-20 years. Thats mine and by the looks of this thread, other people view as well. Sorry for not agreeing with you RUBIN but this is a free country and everyone can have a point of view.

Amen to that. Unfortunately Rubin your idea (and mine) of any VL in good condition seems to be vastly different to a lot of people around the place. More like comparing apples and lemons (literally).
They'll spout on about their great pick-up for 6K and bag the guys that paid 10K or more, but on closer inspection (as you would have seen in your search) you can easily see what the extra money paid for (Not talking any mods here either). I'd hate to be buying one these days.

Yeah your 100% spot on there graig I guess you get what you pay for these days! I was very lucky to find my new purchase and it was a bargin And yeah i would never buy a VLT these day's unless some older person has owned it which is very rare now days.
