Just done my bonnet struts... Fuucking Beautiful!!! Just to clear up something from the other tech article on here: You can 100% use the wagon tailgate ball joints for all 4 bolts as the strut can twist around (meaning you can have the top hole of the strut where the ball joint goes in on the bonnet facing 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock while having the bottom hole of the strut on that goes on your guard facing 6 o'clock.... Hope that explains it) Best 20 bucks ive spent in a long while... strong struts too... I recon I could throw pumpkins off my bonnet now lol Thank you ILLUSIV and everyone else contributing in the other thread. Cheers, Daz Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I had a similar problem Spirit77, I got the balljoints off a vs bonnet, and they were the same length as what you pulled out of a vl wagon. I went and got some out of a vn wagon in the end, they look the same as the ford ones you have. Has anyone noticed the struts slighty rubbing on the vs mounting brackets when opening and closing the bonnet ??. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Hey i'v been wanting to do this for ages except iv got the problem that my bonnet has a walky scoop and the whole thing weighs an f'n tonne! Im guessing after reading both these threads that i would be best off getting new struts as older ones from a wrecker might be a bit worn and not strong enough to hold up my super-weight bonnet? How much did the struts cost new for those who bought them? Cheers, Jack

I got second hand struts, although they looked like they were in pretty good nick. The struts will hold a ton of weight, my bonnet flies up so fast with the gas struts if you don't hold it so I don't think a walky scoop will cause a great deal of problems.

Hey man good article, when i saw this i just had to do it it looked that easy. I went down to the wreckers the other day and found all of the bits but when i went to fit them to the car i found two problems, the first was that when i went to put in the VS ball joints into the front gaurds, there were little clips helping to hold in the original bolts so the joints wouldn't fit, but i overcame this by just prying them out with a small flat blade screwdriver. The second problem was what spirit77 said about the VL tailgate joints being to short and when i went to shut the bonnet, one of them just popped right out, so until i can go back and get some better ones, i've taken the struts out. Apart from these two hicups, they worked really well. the bonnet sits a little lower with the struts that i got but so what, i'm happy. Cheers

Hey thank's ILLUSIV for the excellent step by step diagram on how to install the bonnet struts ,fitted them today work an absolute treat. Dont know why you had trouble with the thread on the VL tailgate ball joints Spirit77 mine went in fine ,also I used struts from a EL station wagon lot later and less used than the old cars....... Hope my VL's not cursed because I used struts off a Ford there all the same brand anyway lol Here's the pics of them fitted.... http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...8/100_0733.jpg (http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o211/turbovl178/100_0733.jpg) http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...8/100_0734.jpg (http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o211/turbovl178/100_0734.jpg)

hey i know this is a thread from the dead but i was at the wreckers the other day and i was wondering if the vs bonnet struts are the same as the vl wagon tailgate ones??? if so does this mean you could get the whole lot from the bonnet of a vs? if so i will go to my dads shed and just take his bonnet struts atleast then i dont have to pay for them nah i'll get them from the wrecker he said he would charge me 11 bucks each so thats pretty good. so does anyone know if the vs struts fit the same way? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

By memory, they are too short? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Affirmative, mine doesnt hold up with an le wing hanging off the back, so you'd bet your house that it wouldnt with a walky aerofoil bolted to it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Too easy. Did this the other day and it worked a treat. The boot sits a little high where I've put the strut but it still seals so no water can get in so not too much of a drama. It prob didn't sit flush before I started. The only prob I have is when I open the boot with the glove box button, the boot flys open at such a speed that it pops the strut off its ball and then slams shut again. I've just unplugged the button until I work out how to slow it down or keep the strut on its ball. Any ideas?
