i reckon i got 1 lifter that is ticking, getting worse, not always ticking but is most of the time, usually taking my foot off the accellerater it goes away but then will come back within a few moments. how do i know if it is the problem with out pulling the engine apart. does this sound like a stuffed lifter. also will soaking them in diesel fix them or do they actually break and need replacing. cheers tails.

yes. i've done that tails83, you add engine flush to your oil, run it for 10 minutes, then drop it and add new oil, during the 10 minutes of running it through, you can hear the lifters actually stop ticking awesome stuff, and if that doesn't work, add some "worn engine treatment", codename for "shut my lifters up pls" Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

cams lifters and such, a note for all This applies to all motors diesel, petrol, lpg, twin cam, single cam even dinosaur pushrod stuff. If you change cam you have to change lifters, other wise you don't acheive the intended lift. You can change lifters without changing cam, but it also has this lift problem. Engines with push rods and pressed rockers (ie, old V8's, holden 6) and the valve buckets and shims (on DOHC engines like the RB and FJ nissans) you should change these too. As applies to the little hydraulic lifter bits in the alloy rockers of enigines like the SOHC RB engines and most small SOHC 4 bangers. Also, valves should be ok, check the valve stem tip fit wear. But if head is off check them good, cracks, colour. it all costs money, but if you don't do it right first time you are wasting your time and/or copious amounts of money.

i have a better way to tell if your lifters are farked change your oil and add lifter free too it mite take a while but drive it for a bit try go over 100 for a while this should get the juices flowing. i thought mine were farked but i just had crap oil in it thats why it started.if it doesnt go away within a week your lifters are buggered and your looking at $ ps:dont waste your time with second hand crap or cleaning them because this is why they make lifter free Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Bringing this back up a bit. I'm assuming that the N/A and Turbo Lifters are exactly the same?

Fantastic article, will help me out alot, any one know whats involved with taking out the cam once you get to the stage of having the lifters and stuff off? I have rebuild a few older engines and stuff but never an OHC engine so I am getting a 2nd hand head to put my new wade cam in soon.

im glad this article is still helping people out. once you've got all the lifter gear off, taking the cam out is reasonably simple. you take off the cam pulley (4 bolts, easier to loosen them with the belt still on) and then undo the 3 bolts holding in the cam at the front of the engine. however it won't slide out with the engine in the car! undo the engine mounts and lift the engine with a crane slightly so it clears the front of the car. if you're game you could use a block of wood and a trolley jack on the bottom of the sump to lift the engine but i dont know if the sump like supporting all the weight by itself as i've never done it. hope that helps.

just wanted to ask a quick question. Got a vl 2 weeks ago for $300 bucks and it runs and all but has been sitting around for 3 months. When i took the rocker cover off its all black from oil. Is it possible to clean all that cr*p off so it looks like nathos engine?? thanks

those pics aren't of my engine, someone emailed them to me when i took too long to get my pics. howver i had all mine cleaned up, i had it all hot tanked when i put a reco head on, so it looked brand new. didn't take long for them to go light brown though.
