I am temporarly using the gutted thermostat till i can figure to root of my overheating problem. A gutted thermostat doesn't flow as much water, thereby letting the engine, after some time, get up to something like operating temperture. I suspect the fan clutch is stuffed and will give it a spin when I get home from work this arvo, thanks natho. I agree with all that is said about not having a thermostat, it's just that by the time i got the Vl going again, I was a bit over doing the home mechanic thing.

plenty of ppl run their vl's without thermostats and have no probs at all. especially in warmer climates like Brisbane they are not as necessary as vehicles operating in cooler areas. You gotta remember these engines were built for use primarily in Japan. Japan has long harsh winters. Summer albiet extremely hot, is very short (about 6weeks before getting cool again). My logic for removal of thermostat was simple: Time and time again, these engines have sufferend the inherent problem of overheating. I wanna do everything i can to prevent this from happening to my engine, no matter how good the rest of the cooling system might be. Sorry moderator I know this issue has been debated extensively in previous threads. I'll leave my 2c worth at that.

hmm, well my point is simply that if the rest of the cooling system is fine, it won't overheat. holden would have done enough testing that they covered both hot and cold climates around australia. here in adelaide even when its 40-43 on the odd day in summer, i drive around with the a/c on and up a very steep and long hill and it still wouldnt go over half, in fact it usually wouldnt even go as far as half on the guage. driving in traffic on these days it was on the 2nd notch. i think in brisbane a vl would be fine.
