87Calais you are a legend!
You were right - I was just able to unscrew the broken piece. I spoke to Nissan in Adelaide today and they're getting the pinion assembly freighted in from Queensland overnight for me. Nissan don't use the MX7 gearbox in any cars (well not in Australia at least) so I asked him what it's from and he said it's out of a Navara gearbox. So if anyone needs one of these parts in future you could try tracking down a Navara at a wreckers. Nissan are charging me $22.95 for the part! Thanks everyone for your suggestions with this and RB30-POWER I'm still interested in seeing your pic.
Cheers.

OK, I got the part and managed to fit it up. Unfortunately my speedo still isn't working!
What is the next likely thing to be the problem? The cable?
I'm going to have to unscrew the dash to get at the speedo cable anyway so is there a way to check and see if the cable is busted?
If I need to get a new cable are they the same as the VL NA speedo cables?
Thanks.

Check the cable at the back of the dash, if the retaining clip is broken it may have fallen out of the dash assembly.
When you have removed the cable from the dash cluster, jack the rear wheels, and get a mate to spin them, and check that the cable is turning, that should atleast prove that the cable is or isnt working, if its spinning, then the instrument cluster must be the problem. Or just drive it up the street if its easier with the cluster removed, and check thats the inner cable is turning.
As for the cables being different, I imagine the NA auto and turbo auto would have the same cable and the NA 5 speed and turbo 5 speed would be different lengths again.
I found these parts on the rare spares price list, but i think there must be a few typos in there, seems to be to many cables listed for the vl.

Also as for the pictures, if anyone is still interested, in my Cal at the moment, its running, NA auto cable without adapter.
When i had the MX7 in my other VL with Manual NA 5 Speed cable, it was shorter and i was able to simply move the brackets that hold it to the trans tunnel and it was still in the tunnel itself.
Because the Auto cable is longer, to get it right, without any binding or anything, i had to move it out to the chasis rail, its still zip tied at the moment, ill put the brackets back onto it when i get a chance.
Also note the cable looks a bit bent in the tunnel, but thats the shape it was when it was connected to the Auto Trans as well.
There is no binding, rubbing, speedo works 100% smoothly and precisely. And because the Speedo Adapters are worth a small fortune, its a cost i cannot see justify itself.

ive put a Auto turbo Speedo cable into my Mx7 turbo V and it spins and everything like that but wen i drove my car im doing like 70kmh and its doin 20kmh.
i have a series 1 calais and my cluster im sure is a Series 2 Calais dash so im thinkin maybe its from a V8.
would any othet Instrumnet clusters from any 6 cylinder VL be ok or duz it have 2 be from a Turbo.

any 6 will do.
Mick - for some reason yours seems to have a heap more room than mine (when i tryed the auto speedo cable). To get my auto cable into the box i had to put a couple of tight bends in it and it was still going to be rubbing on the chasis rail - as soon as i revved the engine i reckon it would have snapped the drive again.
Strange that one car can be such a tight fit and another have plenty of room?? You look like you have plenty of room there.
