Just keep away from the draining diff oil. Did a diff with a mate about a year ago (I told him what to do, he did it ) and he managed to get a bit of diff oil in his hair (he had hell long hair at the time, surfy style) and smelt like cat piss for the next few days....

You forgot to mention the clip on the dif cover which i think held the brake line??
But yeah, very comprehensive thread. Thanks.
Oh yeah, I ended up using Castrol oil for LSD cars.
Cheers!!!

Castrol LSX90 diff oil. u can use LSD oil in a non LSD diff. LSD oil is just a better quality and has an extra additive

how often should you change the diff oil? What if you do burnouts regularly.....

Why does the VL diff not have a drain in the bottom like every other diff ive ever looked at? Cant believe you have to pull the cover off to drain it...Very ***n stupid engineers!

It's easier if you can get hold of a large syringe to suck and refill the diff oil through the filler hole. I changed my oil the other week using one I got from Supercheap or somewhere like that for around $10 for memory. It has a capacity of around 750ml, and a 1/2" plastic tube that's about 2' long. Alternatively, my mate informed me after my purchase that he had a proper suction gun for doing the exact same thing.
Basically you have to remove the filler plug, poke the tubing down into the diff through the filler hole and suck out all the fluid and squirt it back into another container (empty 2lt Coke bottle was the order of the day in my case).
Then wash out the syringe with a bit of kero or the like (to clear out any crap sucked out of the diff), and start sucking from your fresh bottle and "injecting" it into the diff.
This way there is no need to replace or reseal gaskets and the like. Ofcourse if your diff is leaking from the gasket a replacement would deffinately be in order.
Just my two cents anyway and a different view for those who dont want to replace gaskets.

sounds like a good trick and would save a heap of frigging around. Depending on how anal you are, some people (like me) might find it interesting to poke their head in and have a look how the diff works and whether or not the gears are worn or whatever. other thing with your syringe; I doubt one would be able to suck up all the sludge or old oil as effectively as one could if the cover was taken completely off. With the cover removed a cloth can be used to wipe all old oil out - good idea tho.
