My old motor which I had in 2 different cars had done 460,000 kms and the motor was never touched, maybe more because when we got the first VL the motor looked like it come from a wreck,we bought the first car with 227,000 kms on the clock and we put another 230,000 on top of that. The motor was never the smoothest VL motor but I expected it from the kms it had, never had any problems like head cracking or CAS units failing, the only thing which I found it went through was injectors and airflow meters, the first car went through an airflow meter and a set of injectors (popular item according to the wreckers) and a couple of fuel pressure regulators (another popular item sold by a wrecker),not to mention snapped manifold studs which are common on a high km VL. In the first car it was the fault of failed components but in this one which I have now it was meant to have a fully cleaned out fuel system which the old owner paid $1100 to have fixed (had a rough idle) as it had a split low pressure fuel line and a blocked injector. I believe it was misdiagnosis (fuel system not being tested properly for flow & pressure),the fuel pump had a faulty valve inside which lead to the fuel pump putting out 50 PSI rather than the 40 PSI standard, this lead to the rubber diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator stretching and the spring tension holding the ball shut, this lead to extreme pressures like 800 PSI (fire hazard). This caused the injectors on this motor to leak and lead to bore wash resulting in the engine wearing more rapidly, injectors bought from 2 wreckers leaked and the "cleaned" ones leaked also, half the idle problem on the old motor I think was due to the original 300,000 km old engine in the car being that badly treated (as it had a stalling problem when I bought the car),the oil was rarely changed and the seals were that badly worn that there was no spring tension left in the oil seals (rear main in particular) and the rubber had gone really brittle, the motor would've been leaking air out past these seals causing this. The thing is,despite me changing all of the seals on the motor I swapped that with from my first VL into this one (crashed the first),it had done at least 400,000 kms at the time and this motor never stalled, the seals I took out of the 400k kms motor were in better condition, the 300 k km motor had a lot of black baked on sludge on the rockers arms and blew some blue smoke, etc whereas the other motor only had the brown oil stain and would only blow a puff when cold in the end. This motor I treated to an oil change interval of 5000 kms,it did get a bit noisy before I took it out (had a metallic knock) and I noticed it had a fair bit of oil sprayed all through the intake when I took it off the other day (from blow by),the 300 k km motor is now rebuilt and wears an RB25 head and pistons,of course it has a, RB25 high volume oil pump, the only trouble I am having with it now it getting it to idle right, maybe a timing issue or air leak.

My old 86 vl on the original donk is up to 305700 and apart from the odd noisy lifter is still going strong and one reco. injector. As smooth as and doesn't require any oil top up between 7000km oil changes. I was talking to a mechanic who started his apprenticeship when the vl first came out and continued to work for holden for 7 years and he told me he never saw the bottom end of an RB30 in all that time. Awesome engines.

Mine's pushing 280,000, feb. 86 S1. Unlike early VN/VS S1s and VT V8 S2s, there was apparantly no issue with early builds on VLs A bit of ticking on startup and I think my aircon pulley or jockey wheel is gettting a bit noisy... but asides from that, she's sound as a pound. *realises he's cursed himself and waits for a rod to throw this arvo* Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

After the last 4 weeks (4500k's round trip) I now have 347,000 or so k's. Still with the original timing belt! (slack I know ) Gearbox is another problem. Motor is now making a few more noises but it still goes very well until the box stuffs the fun at 2200rpm. There was a taxi in perth about 10 years ago with 1,000,000k's. It was in a book at the Holden dealers in Sydney. The only things that were replaced were starter motors and alternators.Plus the usual stuff like plugs and leads. They are a truly amazing motor thats for sure.

My dad bought a VL exec brand new and was telling me he was in a VL taxi and got to talking to the driver about VL's. The taxi was nearing a million kms and was going to be retired and given to his son when it clicked over that. This would have been around 1990/91.

The rb3.0l in my patrol just clicked over 300000.All original parts to ,apart from sparkies, leads and the like.I got it at 284000.Previous owners(grandparents) babied it to the max. Then i got it,poor thing cops a hiding, forbying and the like.Still thought she never misses a beat.I keep up the regular maintanence and so forth. It helps haven a mechanic for a dad to,just in case.Doesnt use any oil what so ever.Fuel wise it's bout 17-20L/100km.And the engines carrying a lot more weight then a vl to.Bout 2.2tonne. Tough as f**k engine just like the truck.Cant break em.
