And considering the buttons are programmed to whatever function you like, you dont have to have the AM/FM buttons doing nothing .. you can program those to be next/back track .. infact, on the eurovox with stacker, wernt they anyway?
I been told no VS Calais or Statesman allows you to change CD tracks in the stacker thru the left steering wheel switch (unless you could in a VS Caprice which I've never had the chance to find out about). If you can on your VS can you please let me know? Thanks again.
Btw Lord-Data can I ask a favour of you? Since you say you've got a VS series one, I'm in the process of retrimming my interior on my VR and I need new door trims. I'd like to buy a set of VS Calais door trims from a wrecking yard in Sydney or Melbourne but I'm in Albury/Wodonga so I can't actually see the trims unless I want to drive there. I already have the VS woodgrain strips (which the VR's didn't have) and inserts so I'm ready to go.
My question is - are the top parts of the door trims (i.e. the plastic/vinyl bit between the top edge of the velour/leather insert and the rubber and chrome edge against the window glass) the SAME colour as the dash, OR the lighter colour of say, the glovebox plastic and internal fuse cover panel plastic? If like my VR your interior is grey, you'll notice the dash is a darker shade of grey compared to most of the other interior plastic (except for the console surround and sound system surrond which are darker too). If the top bit of the VS door trims ARE darker I'll start looking for a set of VS trims rather than another set of VR ones.
Thanks for your help!

I'll have to have a look tomorrow .. shall take some pics for you if it helps .. And as for the eurovox .. well .. i'm missing a PIN code for it sadly .. shall try and get one from holden on monday perhaps, as it might be a while before I get my good stereo in there .. need SOME form of music, but my understanding of it was that you can change disks and tracks from the wheel control as well.

The PIN - any Holden dealer can issue you with your PIN on their internal intranet system. I did this 12 months ago and it was going to cost me $22, but they did it for me for nothing as they know me as a customer (spare parts and service do, not the new car section unfortunately!) This service fee gives you all your car's PIN's and such - radio PIN, radio serial number, engine number, BCM number, Air Bag module number, Glove box key code and the ingition key code.
I have seen photos of car interiors on sites of online car dealers (such as www.carcity.com.au (http://www.carcity.com.au) in Melbourne) but they often just miss out the part of the door trims I want to see. I've seen one photo of a VS Calais series one and the bits I'm talking about were darker, unless the light had something to do with it. VSII Executive, Acclaim, S and SS all had these bits darker. But to complicate things the VSII Calais trims are the same lighter grey! Typical Holden! I'm not sure about Berlina - I think series one VS had velour right up to the window glass seal. I'm only new to this forum so I haven't figured it out yet, but if it is no trouble for you to post a photo that would be cool. I don't expect that though, I'll find out soon enuf no doubt.

I've read on a number of VR/VS spec sites now that the calais had 8 speakers .. but I am now the proud owner of a VS I Calais .. and i can only find 6 .. front doors, dash tweets and rear shelf speakers .. ah well .. i dont care .. getting new stuff in soon .. As for the steering wheel controls, apparntly it can be done .. but its not cheap .. i've read on another forum (justcommodores, i think .. or LS1.com.au) that there is a company in america that makes a Learning IR device, that connects to, and is compatible with, the VR/VS/VT/VX (all of em) steering wheel controls .. basically, it gets wired into your buttons directly (by passes the BCM) and understands signals from them (apparntly a few US GM cars used the same system), and the other part is a small IR LED that you mount subtly on your center console somewhere pointing at your HU (apparntly above the gear selector is the best spot, with wiring run inside the console) .. you then program it with your HU's hand held remote's IR controls, and it will simply re-produce those IR signals when you push certain buttons on the wheel .. apparntly there *IS* an aussie importer of em too, but I can't recall who .. apparntly worth about $150, before installation .. not cheap, but might be worth it to use ANY remote capable HU with your wheel controls .. I know i'm definitly interested ..
Lord-Data,
I've discovered today that Clarion Australia make a special "Remote Control Transponder for GMH vehicles" for suitable for each of the VR/VS, VT/VU/VX, and VY models. The VR/VS part number is "CAPGMH02". The clarion website says only VS, but the VR wiring and switches is identical. The RRP for one of these is $199 which isn't too bad. This transponder is also of the IR type apparently.
I checked the www.LS1.com.au (http://www.LS1.com.au) forum as you suggested and saw the threads on this topic. Some posters to the forum had doubts about it working on VR/VS/VT but others said they'd installed it and it DOES work. Basically, you can order a Steering Wheel Interface with the learning IR set-up for US$65.99 plus postage costs (Product ID: PESWIX). This is on the www.discountcarstereo.com (http://www.discountcarstereo.com) website. You have to email them first to order so you can get directions on how to order from Australia, etc. This IS cheaper than the Clarion unit, BUT of course from America you don't really get the after sales service and for those of us who don't know how to install the system, bad luck. I know how to do this though it's easy.
But it looks like I'm gonna layby a new Clarion system with a h/u for either $700 or $900, six disc changer for $529 AND the Calrion Transponder/Interface for $199. I've already got a decent subwoofer and amp to use from another car. It'll probably take me the full 12 weeks to pay off the layby but I'm almost decided that's what I'll do now.
I feel like a real goose telling you yesterday "you can't do it - trust me" about using the existing VR/VS controls. Just goes to show you can do anything with cars if you are determined and/or know the right people! Thanks again for making me aware of this. Stuff Blaupunkt!
