Don't lock it. Give him a chance to reply. He doesn't sound like a bad bloke. I traded in a Monotorque for a Nissan one, but not sure how much better it is cause I haven't tried-and-errored. We don't know what he knows or how good he is. He hasn't said anything stupid in his posts. Just his opinion on gaskets. Luke

its not as though they are 200 dollars! mate wake up, they are better - period. you can build an engine with cheap bits and will probably work, but it will not be as durable.

Why take a shortcut of $50 that could cost u alot more in the long run ? You have heard from people that have/had built engines for em running high Boost/HP and the problems assorted with the variety of gaskets types they have used. Also how i think all of em have resorted back to the original gasket. Just food for thought Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ontopic..... Does holden rebadge the Genuine Nissan headgasket, or does it use ACL ones when you ask for a head gasket over the counter. Ive seen both headgaskets that have had about 50k on them, and the cheap one fell apart with major deterioration, whilst the nissan headgasket looked as if you could use it again ! The theory behind the copper headgakset is so you can reuse it between strip stripdowns when racing, but on a properly built street motor, its unnesssary. Given you have to spend a **** load of money on bondings, gasket itself etc, 60 dollar nissan head gasket seems to do the trick just fine. Proof in the pudding, if its good enough for 700HP, i think its good enough for any of us, considering the amount of money and the power its producing now (600HP so far). Building an engine PROPERLY is very involving, and carcrazy is right about the machining, treatment and some parts costing around 1500. Depends how you build the engine, if you just reshell the bearings and repiston the engine, it will work but its a dodgy way of going about it. On the other hand if you get the block decked, bored to spec and the crank ground to spec as well, your tollerances between each journal are going to be spot-on (aiming for about 2, 2.5thou clearance). Hardest part in building an engine is mic-ing up and tollerancing. If your running 1-1.5thou, good chance youll spin a bearing under load, and if your running 3.5thou, probably loose local oil pressure in that journal and spin a bearing as well. Engine building is a big headfcuck, but i suppose those that do it all day everyday get used to it. Doing it right will make you go crazy, as every minor detial has to be catered for. BTW, the jap engines are easy to work on due to barry boltons and the like, but extracting performance out of a n/a 5ltr v8 is some serious work. Too easy to build a Hi HP turbo car, whilst every single detail has to be spot-on when your extracting n/a performance - thats where real engine builder talent comes in. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Quote: And i have a original series 1 n/a VL in my driveway with a turbo block.......eat sh$t. ohhhh really... non turbo did you say ?? eat ****: no thanks dude.. I think my comments apply even more now: I'll repeat... I think nissan head gaskets are a proven 'reliable' head gasket that can take the boost. As proven by ALOT of members on the forums here, they can cop upto 25psi and maybe more without failure of blowing out or having sealing problems like some others that people have found (eg. probably the 'quality' ones ur referring to as well as copper head gaskets) Im sure if u were building 'quality engines' that could withstand a 'quality' pounding, you'd choose a 'quality' head gasket aswell. I dunno wat ur point is here ? If u want to build cheap motors for 'non turbo' vl's go ahead and use ur ezifit or wateva **** ass headgaskets. Ollie

I must admit, after taking back the monotorque and getting a Nissan one, they look remarkebly different. Happy with my decision. Sorry champ, but you can't ignore everyone's opinion and evidence.

Hello everybody and thanks for your replies.....except for the silly ones, from people that think they know everything. YEH i'm a mechanic, im 24, and iv'e worked on VL's in my sleep and still gotten excellent results. Been at it full time since i left school, and spent all my free time before then working on bikes/cars. I'd be opening my own business but at the moment i'm letting reason's grow. ACL gaskits are market "holden/nissan rb30e". Last time i bought a related part from holden, it came in the original nissan wrapping. i wasn't being "narrow minded" my customer was from information he got here..... for instance "series 1 and 2 blocks are different" which is not true. i have a 86mdl non turbo VL in the drive way, which is not mine, but it's a genuine low km car etc......and has the original motor with a turbo block. I started this thread to find out what the fuss was............i have never heard in my life of a ACL gaskit being not up to the task, (even with my tests) so i asked the question "What is everyone's fascination with nissan head gaskits?" 700hp had the best replie, actually stating a reason why his #1 choice was genuine. I build quality.......it's my "Full Time Job", done everything from 12a/13b rotary's, v8's, v6's, holden 6's, and our beloved Nissan RB series engines. re: blocking/banning/silly behaviour. You guys, have purhaps taken this out of context. Take a chill pill, or seek advice from your local physician.

Man, who needs the chill pill! Dude, good luck on your own business! Because you are going to need it! 24Yo mechanic? Nothing to boast about dude. Still wet behind the ears. When you start getting renowned and start turning some record breaking engines out, then you will earn respect.

hey too all of you that are puttin down ttvlman work/products, well some of you should actually try it out before sayin anything, i've known ttvlman for a good few years, i always ask him for advice n prices etc, and he has always pointed me in the right path and he wont guarentee anything but good quality stuff. I've been in a few of his cars, his rotors have always gone hard and i've been in one of his vl turbos and i can honestly say we were a car length a gear in front of a nice mod'd supra that sounded of its guts. His cars are good, and with dave its not the case of if its cheap its not good quality, he just manages to do stuff cheaper and make less then everyone else would, He just loves his cars. So before you knock any parts or work he does, try it, you'll be impressed, all my work is goin to him now and in the future. Cheers guys.

Quote: I build quality.......it's my "Full Time Job" how can you say that when you use a full ACL kit in an engine, they are not quality parts, the average mechanic out there is as rough as. why do you think you build quality engines, what about them is qaulity compared with jo blo mechanic ?
