Ill try and explain best i can. All the parts are redily avalible from jaycar or ****smith. They are all listed on that link i sent you (updated), ive also updated what pins go where, should be pretty straight forward now, i think. I got the magnifing glass out b4 and the diode is a 1N4004. But ive added that on the parts list too. Basically the four output pulse was never used hence the missing componets. Basically you need 8 pulses per revelotion to get the speedo working correctly. ( i picked up an orginal vk sender unit today and verifyed this). Relizing only a few componets were needed to activate the circuit with 8 pulses per revolution on pin 3 i went that way, keeping cost down and complexity. I have had mine functioning and it was very close to my analogue reading on my old speedo(with modified board fitted). spining it in a drill with both speedos conneted they were approx 2kmph out. Not too bad i think. But full compatabilty has been kept this way thou.

Excellent! Brilliant work my friend! Shall be making a trip to DSE today me thinks Makes sence actually, now that I think about it, that the board is capable of the right output .. there was a prototype VL calais with a digital dash, so holden must have had it working some how I shall keep you posted how I go with the conversion on my unit! Thanks again! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

One last final question, if you dont mind .. sorry to keep bugging you, but my elecontrincs isnt as good as yours On the back side, the transistor and resistors, Am I correct in assuming the middle leg joins the 850kohm resistor in the air, no board joints? What about the 3rd leg that joins to the 100kohm .. that also appears to be a flying join? The 1st leg of the transistor joins to the rear side of the R4 joint, yes? Thanks for your help again! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Curious also (I guess i'll find out in due course anyway) .. Which side of the original dash did it read? Higher or lower?

Sorry for all the multi-posts .. just been doing some searching on the DSE and jaycar websites, and cannot find the 2N5459 Field Effect Transistor(or Jfet) Do you know the part number from either store? or a compatible component? Thanks!

I looked on thier site and you are right they must of discontinued that mode a few months ago. I believe a 2N5457 should work (instead of the 2N5459). Ill get one tommorow or monday and chuck it in to make sure it works. That one is avalible at **** smith. If not might need to source the 2N5459 from somewhere, but i doubt as it a general perpose jfet. From what i remember it was the speed was lower by about 2kmph. Very hard to judge when using a drill to spin the input shaft. Yes the 850k resistor connects to the middle leg of the jfet(in air) Mount the jfet Flat face down. Yes the 1st leg joins to the rear side of R4. Also the 3rd leg with the 100k resistor, is a flying join. Hope this hepls.

Finally finished my speedo unit today, it came up a treat. Took a little more work than i expected, but it works well.

Have you tried to fit the strip across the top yet off the original vl yet?? Im having alot of trouble making it fit so it dosent cover any of the gauges. If thier a trick yourve done, id like to know it!

I havnt mounted it yet .,., Iv sat it on top to see how it looks, and like you said, its not quite perfect .. I did at one point have an alternative, but it would require some glue/plastic welding to make work .. the indicators and buttons in the VK are built into the lower strip of the dash hutch .. the VL has the same plastic strip in its dash hutch, and its the exact right length to include all the lights and buttons .. so basically you could cut that lower bit out completely, and replace it with the VK one, and superglue/plastic weld/melt it together, and basically end up using the VK indicators and buttons .. How much height clearance is there above the top of the VK cluster and the VL dash hutch?

Well it is possible to do it. i ended up cutting the mounting brackets off the original vl cluster and changed the a little. I just bolted it into the vl and all of them show. ill try ang get some pics for you for the brackets. It just makes life so easy, because it sets the angles and distance correct for you straight away. Dam its coming along now. Ill post pics of the brackets on the site. The speedo sensor came up a treat too!

Sounds good .. will love to see those pics .. hard to imagine at the moment without looking closer at mine .. but sounds good .. can't wait to have this working How have you gone with the warning wires and stuff? also any progress with A4/A7, B1, and everything on the C connector? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Went to DSE today, got all the parts .. well, except the 850k resistor .. the closest i could find they had was 820k .. hopefully thats ok? Anyway, put it all together and no go .. absolutely nothing on that pin .. the other 3 pins still work fine .. just nothing new .. any ideas what might cause that? any trouble shooting guides to help track it down? Also interestingly, your circuit in those pics is blue, mines green .. number on the back of mine is 37217/2 (10) where yours from the photos is 37217/2 (11) .. As far as I can tell the boards look the same .. just a very slightly different revision in number .. but maybe a minor difference that prevents the mod from working effectivly? If its the same board, the only things I can think of are that the 850k resistor is critical to operation (I figured at worst it would throw accuracy out, not cause no output at all?), or perhaps the transistor on the front side is installed the wrong direction .. hard to tell from your pic .. I've installed mine the same direction as the other 3 on the board, is this correct? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Could you take a few photos if possible for me?? I really need to see it. I didnt relize thier was different version of boards. Anyway ive updated my site at the bottom of the page. Have a read and post any questions you have and ill try and answer them. If you get some photos send them to [email removed] P.S I got the dash connected and some of the warning to work today. I also installed that little circuit board inside the vk calais dash, help keep it clean. My pickup sensor is quite small and sits external with three wire coming out of it.

I shall take some photos tomorrow .. need the pliars to un-bolt the board again and theyr out in the shed From what I can tell tho, its identical to your board in terms of tracks. Your Photos look great! whats the speedo unit mounted inside? Any tricks to doing that? I'll also be making up the logic probe tomorrow (kicking myself for getting rid of my old only only 6 or so months ago .. and checking out the circuit .. my diode is a different colour (black/grey) to the others on the boards and yours in the photos .. tho it has the same part number .. thats where my suspicions lie at the moment, short of perhaps me cooking the board while unsoldering the holes .. i dunno .. shall see where the logic probe takes me .. Looks great with the VL strip mounted on there .. so it just lines up, right? Sounds too easy Those side brackets to mount in the car, what are they from? custom made and welded on? or something else? Hows the progress with the buzzer and the other warning wires and feeds? PS, if your interested, I found a place selling a flowscan, new in box, for $175 .. I wont be needing it as I'm 90% sure im going straight LPG in the near future .. but figured you might be interested? Email me or ask here if you wnat it and i'll email you the details .. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ive added some more photos on my site for the speedo drive unit, its housed inside some 50mm PVC stormwater pipe, with two cap ends. The end brackets are made from aliminum, due to being easy to work with and then is bolted on from the inside of the vk dash housing. I now know the buzzer is for the hand break, and i believe their is a problem with that circuit in the dash. But i figure i dont really want it anyway, so i have just removed the park brake and buzzer wires all together. I now have the oil,low coolant and low fuel warnings working. Colud you P.M the detail on where to buy that flowscan unit, i dont believe ill need it, but im not sure how close my calibration of the trip meter is, so if i do go that way ill purchase it. Auto dim is still a bit of a mystery as how it works. I know it works on a positive feed, but havent worked out if it works on pulsed input or certain voltage ranges. Hopefully get that figured out tommorow.

Ok, pics of my board posted at: http://www.vidguide.com/IM004340.JPG http://www.vidguide.com/IM004341.JPG http://www.vidguide.com/IM004342.JPG Sorry about the quality and size .. hope its enough .. shall go logic probing later. What are the sizing for the spacers you use in your custom enclosure for the speedo unit? Same as the original plastic spacers?
