I was at a car wreckers in Melbourne & saw a vl there that had a custom parcel shelf in it still. As I was with a mate at the time, I couldn't get it because it wouldn't fit in a 2dr sports coupe. But doesn't really matter as I already have a custom made parcel shelf that I made myself. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

What is wrong with just using the original parcel shelf when installing speakers? As long as the job is done proper the first time there shouldn't be any problems with sound or other noises. Thats why i found anyway.

ive decided to make my own parcel shelf so that if i **** it up i can chuck the original back in. i just want to know what thickness mdf is the best choice. im only putting in some pisspoor 6 x 9's (the stock ones out of a mates 91 magna) so it shouldnt vibrate too much. i was thinking 6mm cos it would be strong enough for the speakers but still flexible enough to fit in there nice and snug. measured it up and figured id have to get a 1800 x 900 sheet, which will be a prick to get home, even though all i need is 1600 x 400. guess ill have enough for 2 shelves cheers

i have 19mm in my vl with 300w max Kenwoods and it sounds pretty good. (the thicker the mdf the deeper the bass). if ur puttin in crappy speakers then u dont really need 19 mm but i think that why go to the trouble of making one, carpeting it and all when u might want to use it to put some better ones in.

hey guys, i just recently put 17mm MDF in mine and a quick way to cut out the correct shape (rather than trial and error) is get a ball bearing straight cutter for a router. cut out the approximate shape leaving about 5-10 mm overhang on the edge. secure the old shelf on the bottom of the MDF board and set up the router so that the ball-bearing runs along the old parcel shelf and cuts the the MDF board. once it's set up it's easy as **** to cut out and you get a perfect fit. the only thing with using thicker MDF (15 mm and above i think) is that when you go to put the seat back in, the thing wont fit cos the lip on the top of the back seat sits up on the MDF. i had to recut my shelf so that it sits flush with the seat now, but depends on how much time you wanna spend on getting it right. Cheers grokes

i'm glad some people found it usefull! my last parcel shelf was 20mm mdf. i layed the wood on the ground, pulled the old parcel shelf out.. sketched out on the timber, and cut the shelf out of the wood. * make it a little bigger then the original shelf (you can also sand it back for a snug fit) *place parcel shelf in, and get in the boot and through the sheet metal mark out the holes for the speakers (where the magnets are going to sit) *cut holes *doof doof to your hearts content

i've heard sum talk about using the stock parcel shelf, aparrently ity's kinda rigid, well it's not. I used the stock 1 4 a bit and it shook more than the rear window shade i had on (that means a lot). Now i have 9mm mdf carpeted with automotive carpet all around which i bought from bunnings. I bolted it down in 5 spots all around the parcel tray (the holes were already there) and it doesn't move a bit. Myt friend used 7mm craft wood and it worked fine too. costs: $14 - 9mm mdf (a little bit bigger just incase) $14 - 1.5mx1.5m grey automotive carpet (make sure it has a thin base so it bends) $6 - box of sharp wood staples Now if you can't afford that and a couple of hours making it then i guess you can't afford ur petrol either, in that case sell ur car and use public transport... lol. the easiest way to get the right shape is trace ur old one onto the wood b4 cutting it.

Im running, well, was running, the standard shelf, but instead of cutting 6x9 holes i just cut rough 6in holes and used an angled spacer. Running xpold head deck and top line xplod 6x9 3ways it went off. Mirror vibrated with the base. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

CAN ANYBODY MAKE ME A PARCEL SHELF??? out of mdf, wateva thickness, as long as when i get it, i can slide it straight in and it will fit, i dont need carpet or anything like that. I will pay $$ for it, this is a great oppertunity for neone who has done it b4 and wants to make some quick cash cos the materials cost pretty much nothing. My current shelf has had it, i need to put 6x9s in the new one and i dont have the tools to cut the shape of the shelf out of the mdf. Anyone???? thankyou!

Hey, Just wondering MARMO are those headlights legal in melb. If so how much would it cost to them or similar installed coz they look amazing (and how do the high beams work with that setup). Also ive got jvc 6x9's, and pioneer sub and head unit. Is it crucial to change the ****ty speakers at the front, as i will attempt to install new rear parcel shelf soonish. btw thanks for the guide....
