Actually reading through this I can't why you guys are going off at rockysilvia. i nfact it has nothing to do with intercoolers. the term intercooler flutter seems to be only used amoungst the VL community too which is very strange. The reason most likely to be causing this cause with the traditional way and method of modifying a VL the noise appears when you guys fit the coolers cause infact it actually appears with more boost. My car is a perfect example of this, it makes the noise and my intercooler sits in a shed and is by no means attached to the car. The type of air filter you chose also takes a role. A K&N filter seems to make the noise quite quiet, where as a hks filter will make the noise much more noticable.
this conversation has led me to believe that most people are modying their car as a fashion statment as by your car making this noise you are actually doning harm to your turbo. If you want to stand out get an external wastegate, as the fluttering noise really does nothing for your performance ....

87VLT without an intercooler, 12PSI and a K&N pod filter mine used to make an almighty whoosh sound not fluttering as of such.

when i back off in my JET, it sounds like i have a BOV, but no i dont have one, figure that out.
Every car is different, my old cooler made the "flutter" noise but my new one does a totally different noise.

anyone who thinks their non-intercooled vl makes "intercooler flutter" i would be very interested to hear a recording. also i am yet to see any physical evidence to support the BOV's protecting turbos theory. sure theres all the air forcing the turbo to stop real fast and blah blah but people seem to be adamantly convinced of their effectiveness without seeing hard evidence. id imagine turbos are pretty solidly constructive and wouldnt have much trouble standing up to a bit of air slowing the blades down. i have no evidence for that either but it seems more logical.
ps. rockysilvia stick to your initial argument. does putting an intercooler on a car result in the flutter noise or not.

Hrmm i highly doubt it dude.. you vl without a cooler would be making a wastegate woosh.. a deep pwoohhhhh kinda noise as opposed to a tu tu tu tu intercooler flutter noise.
I have sound evidence in the form of windows media files if you really cant accept the difference between the two.
Here are two of what I know and would always refer to as "intercooler flutter" noises.
http://www.dataweb-au.com/exchaser/80MVL_cooler.WMA
http://www.dataweb-au.com/exchaser/Dayle_cooler.WMA
I'll also get a sound file up of a stock 5speed vlt without a cooler or BOV, that clearly has the 'wastege pwoohhhhh' noise in the next day or 2 so that you can compare them.
Cheers
Ollie

well by all means 87vlt chuck up a wave file of ur "flutter" i highly doubt there is one there.. maybe the woosh ppl are talking about but not the flutter noise.

Who cares the noise sounds so nice, really who cares if its the cooler or something else
RB3-747 - that woosh noises is the standard pressure release valve leting out air, its that big round thing that you plug up or weld up that sits in your plenum

even on 7 psi my mates calais makes a nice wooshing sound when u back off the throttle... its pretty satisfying, but nowhere nearly as cool as the dudududu noise we all know and love

So why have we got people claiming their non intercooled VL's flutter? Proof? This should be good for a laugh. Then you'll get excuses like "Oh, it like did it last time, and it only does it a bit"

INFLYT like i have said b4.. i think most ppl are mistaking there "woof" noise with a flutter... all vlts will make a heay breathing sound when u back of the throttle. but yer proof would be nice if they are still willing to claim it?

87vlt - thanks for the support mate, I knew there would be someone out there!
Choice Bro -
Yo 'bro'. If you read my post above yours you would see I clarified that I was talking 'relative pressure'. I could also quote it in absolute, mm of Hg, whatever else you want, but most people and gauges talk in relative pressure, and that's what I described it in.
As for your pre-empting, you say that the engine noise is made in the cylinders, passes through the exhaust and leaves through the exhaust tip. Hence its final 'point of dissipation' in the exhaust and that's why we call it exhaust noise. Fine.
Similarly, the 'flutter noise' is made in the compressor wheel (as you have agreed), passes backwards through the inlet pipes (in the direction of the air during closed throttle) and is heard coming from the pod filter. So therefore its final 'point of dissipation' is the pod filter or whatever filter is attached to the inlet piping. If anything it should be called a 'filter noise' then. The intercooler is located on the outlet side of the compressor, and is not the final 'point of dissipation'. Stick to you na vl 'bro'.

It is (and I have a few people agreeing with me now) the turbo that makes the noise. Regardless of whether you have a big IC, small IC, lotsa piping or not, high boost or not, pod filter, no filter. The noise is made by the turbo.
While an IC may adjust the pitch, frequency, db, duration of the noise, the same can be said for changing the turbo, diameter of the piping, the boost, the pod filter etc. No matter what you choose to attach or change to your car - it is the turbo that makes the noise, and you don't need a cooler to do it. Why not call it turbo noise or turbo flutter then (like other forums)??

post pics and sound files and ill beleive it.. ollie is doing that to prove our argument.. but i would  still like to see (or hear) a vl with out a cooler make a flutter.

hmm, some interesting reading.
my mates vlt, non intercooled, flutters a small amount, so i would have to agree with rockysilvia on some points.
I think everyone agrees that bolting up an intercooler increases the noise greatly.

my N/A does that  but its not that loud, comes back through cold air intake. sounds good sometimes, usually in 2nd, in 1st sounds like a big fart... ops:

Why is your intercooler in a shed? Is this some sort of fashion statement? How many pounds boost is your shed running?
If a VL is a fashion statement then that makes a done up excel a gay brothel.

Rockysilvia: You thought atmospheric pressure was 0psi. You can't admit to being wrong. I understand, it must be hard to be the next Leibniz.
However, I do agree with your motion to change the speech patterns of Bogans though. How do you propose we make them say "Cavitation" and other large words such as "sphincter" and "anal-retentiveness"? I look forward to your continual efforts to help the Bogans.
Yours Sincerely,
Choice Mudda Fuggin Bro.

no one is disputing the fact that the turbo makes the noise! how stupid do you think we are?? of course if you put an intercooler on an n/a it wont make that noise and no one ever said anything like that. all we are saying is that there is a specific fluttering sound that is only present on a car with an intercooler! there might be noises that are remotely similar or come from the same thing but sound like a "woosh" but these are not intercooler flutter. that is the whole reason why it is called intercooler flutter, because it is a distinct intercooler induced sound.

Another thread going downhill.
stockvlt I didn't mean that whoosh sound (pressure relief valve was blocked up by that stage), but I know what you mean.
Can this argument please be settled sometime soon. It seems that we are all right on the matter. The IC amplifies the fluttering thus that is why all of us call it 'intercooler noise'. Everyone agree?
