16-05-03, 20:10 GMT+10#21 [quote="aus880"]OLD GOLD: The Gen III is 5.7 litres which is 350 cubic inches.
If you do the maths on the stroke and the bore it is actually 346 cubic inches but just called 5.7. kinda like how the 304 is 4.9 litres but it is just referd to as a 5 litre. My old man had a VT2 SS and for a 4 door family sedan it was excellent. traded after 102000 cained kilometres with very few problems. The car was just as happy towing a boat, getting groceries or flog around the block. Fuel economy is great. While a VLT would beat it convincinly consider that is was not envisiond purely as a friday night cruiser. Handleing and brakes are alot better than a VL too. I agree you have to be a d!ckhead to fork over 60K+ for a HSV if you want a car for performance only but if you want a car for kiddy carring monday to friday and some weekend fun a 5.7L commodore is excellent

That article that you read may have been written by a Ford nut, it sounds like it was very biased.
If anyone's interested at all, I'll scan the article. The article was not bagging Gen3s at all, but was a breakdown of problems you'll run into if you want 427 cubes out of one.
Yeah, Chev just called the Gen3 5.7s instead of 350s so people could say they've got a 350 chev, even though it's not actually a 350. Then Gen3 is also totally metric, which is peculiarly un-american.
I don't think the GT falcon should be compared with a GTS - A GTS is $30,000 more expensive and is a limited run product. A GT is not.
New falcons weigh a ****load. No wonder they're slow(er). Still, I'd rather have one over a VY for sure!

18-05-03, 12:42 GMT+10#24 how about that maroon and white falcon GT....what an ugly piece of crap that was. I wonder what Ford are thinking sometimes.

18-05-03, 20:11 GMT+10#25 But i'm not talking about price difference. They claim the Ford has 290kw but i very much doubt it does. It dosn't weigh a huge much more than a GTS so that shouldn't affect its performance by that much

18-05-03, 22:09 GMT+10#26 the new holdens are not to my liking at all - i have always thought that holdens have looked semi nice - until i saw the new vy -
for starters - looks like a magna on the back
secondly - the plastic on the back of the rear bumper looks SHOCKING- looks like a toy car - as for the motors well, thats a whole different story-
however - i will admit - im not really a ford man at heart - but the new falcons are gorgeous -

18-05-03, 22:42 GMT+10#27 hey guys, just thought i would chip in about these genIII motors. i had a guy from a company called the touch up guys to do touch ups on my car. he turned up to my house in his VY GTS, as he was leaving i go to him "thats a real nice car" and he turned and said to me well only when its working, he then proceed to tell me how he has had FOUR motors in it, 9 diffs and 5 gearboxes. i told him he was bull****ting me so he told me to come over to his car and he pulled out the log book and sure enough it was there. i was totally amazed, such a beautiful and gutsy car can stuff up so much.
as for Petros' comment, i totally aggree on everything. from the back its hard to tell the holdens fords and magnas apart from each other. bit of a shame but hey thats life.

19-05-03, 02:15 GMT+10#28 Jezzarr mate, wat u have just said pretty much sums it up.......
they are just plain ****.
if wat u sed is true that is a ****in joke! a $100,000 car having gone through that! those gen 3 motors are ****ed up, sure they may have a bit of grunt but it is nowhere near justified for all those problems and money.
sums it up really

19-05-03, 05:36 GMT+10#29 I think it's hard to say that gen3s are flawless, but yeah.
I find it hard to believe that bloke went thru 5 gearboxes. Tremecs are great things. 9 diffs is hard to believe, he must thrash the **** out of it for this to be true. Consider how long VYs have been out for.

19-05-03, 07:37 GMT+10#30 Like I said before the NSW Highway Patrol uses hundreds of Gen III powered SS and Exec Commodores and I'm not aware of them having any problems with them.
Thats got to say something about reliability because they use them in pursuits regularly and clock up kays fast.
