which is why more attention should be paid to driver licensing
i've had that exact thing happen to a mate and the wankers excuse was "i dont have ABS"
I was once talkin to a copper and one day he was in a vt ss with abs with a crazy cop driving on a dirt road doing about 210 crazy yes!!! he said the car was sliding around out of control but contiued to increase speed when the crazy cop says wana see how good abs is and slams the brakes on with in a few 100 meters the car stoped and still in a staight line but new jocks were needed he he in my View if it saves my life or the life of others once in 50 years Id have it any time ever body makes mistakes
it's awesome, wish I could have it on the VL
You stick your foot down and you can feel the brakes throbbing on and off, awesome stuff...
on another note - a guy with an exchase VK was trying to tell me it had ABS as part of the 'cop' pack - haha :? what a tool

spiritfc, that is why you don't panic and slam the brake on. ABS gives people a false sense of security as they rely on the ABS to work every time. One day it may not and the ***heads who worship ABS won't have a clue what to do in a normal mechanical braking situation when ya ABS ***s up.
silver_ice said it best
erm if you are competent and actually practise the skills you learn at advanced driving courses you should be able to "replicate" abs yourself by pumping the brake pedal in an emergency that requires it. ABS is an excuse for lack of skill in drivers
A= Absolute
B= Bull
S= Sh1t
How do you know what will go through your mind when an emergecy happend?? A lot of people freeze... I remember reading an Australian Karate champion got attacked in the street by ONE bloke and he finshed up in a coma because he just freezed when attacked.
Unless you have been in a few accidents no one knows how they will react in an emergency.
So ABS is VERY good.
I have........100 Km/h into a tree. the copper reckons that the only thing that saved me was that i didn't freeze or panic, i just sat relaxed for a split second, washing off speed with light brake pedal after i realised all control was gone.
He told me i did all that i could and didnt even book me for neg driving.
That's how I react in an emergency.
PS. Karate has *** all to do with ABS
God I love some of the responses that get wriitten on this board.
Some of you guys sound like awesome drivers, I really have to meet a few of you....

even if you dont do it perfectly, i'd prefer having the responsibility of doing it and having more "control" over it than a computer deciding for me

Ahh right......so how many times per second can YOU guys sense that a wheel is locking up and release braking pressure? Even the most basic ABS systems around can release & reapply braking pressure around 20 times PER SECOND! The ABS system also does this to EACH INDIVIDUAL WHEEL, so if one out of your 4 wheels is skidding, its pressure is released whilst the other three to continue to slow the car. Please explain to me how you can can perform this better, I'd love to know.

And you walked away? Got any shots of the car? (Maybe if you had ABS you may have been able to keep control and steer AROUND the tree instead?!).
No, I'm not saying ABS is the be-all and end-all, but in a normal road car it is definitley an advantage.
Even the best of drivers have acciedents if I was in a major one id want any help from anything to save my hide
but what if your driveing on the side of the road cause some trucks on the wrong side of the road with on wheel in the dirt and one on the road and braked then what abs would really help then
Apples to Oranges here.....
on a track, ABS is not good, as you want total control over your braking at any one time.
On the street, extremely good, espeically for wet weather and snow. While you can outbrake abs if you really wanted to, you wont be able to do it consistantly every time. Perhaps your Ego can think that, but i guarantee that ABS vs NonABS in all possible situations, the ABS will have a higher average due to its constantancy. Emergancy pays a big factor, and so does awareness, ABS tries to fill in the gaps.
Not everybody is a hardcore car enthusist, and not everybody knows how the hell their car works, so ABS for the stupid majority is a big YES in my eyes.
Back to a serious note now,
Ive read alot articles, that say if you are unfamiliar with ABS and its action, you should take your car to an empty road and specifically lock it up, to get used to the pedal feel.
As apparently alot of people panic when ABS kicks in and actually release the brakes thinking something is wrong, as they dont understand you have to keep the brake pedal firmly planted and the pulsating is the ABS working.
Anyone got any thoughts experiences?
some abs systems, such as those on a Eunos 30x sound really bad but work well.... though i think it kicks in too early on this model.
On a soarer, its got a late kick in, which gives you HEAPS of pedel feel before it decides to take over - very handy for racing and for keeping the car in your control.
If you just slam and hold on, then any ABS will engage, which is why it was designed, because thats the typical non-car-educated response for the masses.
Driver education will outweigh any form of car enhancement. I am awear that those buying preteige cars or hi performance cars, have a driver course included in the price (BMW for example), which is a sensational idea, as it teaches the driver how to use thier car to get the maximum benefits out of it.

And you walked away? Got any shots of the car? I stuffed my rallycar into a dirt bank at around 70km/h. It had a fully integral welded-in 12 point rollcage and we were wearing 5-point three-inch harnesses.
The car was a total write-off, my navigator broke his ankle, I had massive bruises from the harnesses and could hardly walk for a few days.....Are you sure it was 100km/h??
(Maybe if you had ABS you may have been able to keep control and steer AROUND the tree instead?!).
yeah he did, but i seriously doubt abs would have helped him steer around the tree as the kangaroo he hit first spun the car. I can post your crash pics if you want boostedcal.

Yeah, they do suggest that even without ABS actually - when I had a driving lesson going for my p's we came to a totally deserted road and the intructor told be to plant the brake... it was a decent (well, it was a hyundi elentra or something heh) but new car so it pulled up and it wasn't too bad the brakes in my n/a are pretty shocking though, after driving around in a VT all week

I do have pics, how do i get them on the site? Might mail em to sin.
BTW... If i steered around the tree I'd have smashed through a barbed wire fence, so it turned out ok as i am still here to tell the story.
From the pics you hit at a lot less than 100km/h, probably washed off speed with brakes and spinning.
Lucky though. BTW; how was the kangaroo???? or is he imbedded in the front somewhere?
Wasn't a bad looking VL prior to the prang.

That is the example I have been trying to make. Washed off a sh1tload of speed.........oooh..with no ABS..........which was the difference between walking away or not..In that case ABS would have been a curse and maybe i would have jumped on them, when leaving the tar & onto the dirt ABS WOULD have locked up, causing the car to increase speed.
