Can i ask whats the differance between cheap timing lights and more expensive ones? What are the cheap ones doing or not for people to think they are crap? I always thought a timing light is a timing light, you dont have to be a genious to know how to use one.

Cheap units can be inacurate by 1 or 2 deg, so they are fine unless your running a race/drag car, peoples who cant work it out , get a workshop manual! Which you all should have already if your at all interested in your cars and saving money... Now lets see if I can press da right button, hey gel hey bro......

The one I had you virtually had to stick ya hand right down along side the radiator fan just to get the light to show -- and yes it was at night when it was a little bit dark. Heh - they are just cheap and crap Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

exactly what does detonation sound like? i have some bad injectors, but under full throttle and with a load the motor makes a strange noise (sometimes). It sounds like air escaping the fuel system through a small gap or something, which makes sense as 2 injectors are leaking. the sound is constant but unsteady (i.e. varying volumes and not at all in time with the engine firing). kinda slurp noise. i'm hoping this doesn't resemble detonation>? sounds like it could be a bearing or something...

Detonation (pinging) sounds like a subdued rattle when engine suddenly comes under high load

does anyone actually have proof of the benefits of advancing the timing? ie a dyno sheet or something?

vlred.. well have a look at my dyno sheet. Ive gained 20kw at the wheels, and advanced timing and 2 1/2" cat back only exhaust have been added. i'd say it makes a real difference

I find just filling your car up with Optimax works well but advancing the timing does bugger all to perfomance with a standard or backflow exhaust system,it isn't till you get a proper exhaust system fitted then you will really notice how advancing the timing increases perfomance. Mine needed to be advanced by 5- 10 degrees as fitting a 3 inch straight through system made the car sluggish down low.

Quote: does anyone actually have proof of the benefits of advancing the timing? ie a dyno sheet or something? well if you believe the charts Powerchip used to have on their site (i have them on my site) there are benefits to be had. they used a chip to advance the timing in certain parts of the map as well as increase the rev limiter btw this was based from chip for a R31 GTS 2 did when i disassembled it which i'm guessing would be similar to just a plain R31/VL chip. the gold/silver variants would just increase the peak timing in parts of the ignition maps depending on the type of fuel you use daily btw it does make a difference - mainly in low torque range
