yep, had similiar ticking sound. Turned out to be lifters, so I changed my oil to Mobil 1, that was 5 years ago, and the ticking noise hasn't come back.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
If you accelerate and the noises gets louder as you accelerate. it can only be two things, the lifters or the wooddruff key, the key way.......
Mine got louder as you accelerate, finally it threw the timing out that was when I knew it was the keyway. A ****hhead of mechanic told me i needed a new engine, but lucky i found the problem, and got it welded it costed me $15 for a almost brand new key way.
So beware guys...........
I can't remember if GMH sells em individually, but if/when you take
the lifters all out of the head, you can do a simple test on each one
to test if its buggered; (mentioned in the GMH manual)
sit em in a row standing up along the bench, then u press
down on each lifter - a goodone hurts yr thumb because the
lifter tit wont move except fractionally when u press downward
hard on it, a buggered one has noticeably TOO much give, feels
kinda like pressing down on the top nib on a click biro pen
(without the click, of course).
It pretty much is that simple, the difference IS noticeable when you
have a good and bad one to compare it too because there doesn't
seem to be any inbetween state, they're either buggered or not.
Being a bit short of cash and armed with one buggered and one good
lifter I went to a wrecker and making careful comparisons, I bought
myself two 2nd hand good ones for about $20 each - I know some
will jump in to say its false economy, u should replace em all with
brand newbies, but if u don't have the cash then..........
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
With the trans in neutral, handbrake on maybe u could get someone
to blip the accelerator and/or take it gently up thru the rev's while u
listen round the engine with a lengthy piece of large inside bore flexible
hose to try and narrow down where the noise seems to be relatively
loudest coming from.
Maybe you'll get lucky and it won't be the eng- I had a tinging noise
while driving (and driving me mad), turned out to be a rear calais
wheel hubcap tinging away- it's metal clips were too loose...
OBES NOT.....
(P.S. a loose sparkplug lead can also cause a tick type sound if
the spark has to jump a small gap to get to the sparkplug...)
