I'm not too sure if it's a set rule, but my mate has some JBL 6*9's in his parcel shelf, and he has to pump up the head unit to get his "desired" sound level, and now his speakers are starting to die. Sounding like stocko crackling ones. I'd assume because you have to boost the level so much to gain such a little amount, whereas with an amp, you dont have to. There's probably a real reason, but I dont know it.

For any given volume level, a speaker requires a certain amount of power to generate a sufficient magnetic field to operate properly. When you turn your volume up on your head unit, it is unable to produce the power levels that the speakers demand, so they distort, and start to wear out. Speakers that are running off a well matched amplifier will always have enough power and will not deteriorate as a result of being underpowered.

Yes. I think.
You could always just buy a cheap(ish) 2x ?? amp, keep things sounding better.

yeah to add to that, the distorting sound u get when running off an hu, is usually the hu's internal amp. When the amp is struggling and u hear the distorting its feeding a direct 12v into your speakers. Like connecting the speakers to your car battery. Not good. The voice coils heat up. then the speakers are ****ed. A lot of people go, oh they are higher wattage,im going to get less distortion and more volume. Not true. Lower wattage speakers running of an hu will sound better. The pioneer 50x4 mosfet is only about 18 wrms per channel. There is also a certain degree of cleaness to this power as well. like the first 12 wrms are clean then the remaining is just distortion.

yeah, because the gear i bought is Audiophile Competition gear, it is designed to be run off an amp. the way the speakers are designed requires more power than a head unit can give. hope that helped a little
p.s im saving my pennys up and looking at importing the new Kicker Sub when it comes out. 10,000 watts max. biggest sub ever. check it out at www.kicker.com looks like it should be some good fun should cos me a whole ****load too
cheers

i wouldnt go overboard, i use the bullet proof vests and if you drop them it will shatter them and its no longer strong. Kevlar is good however you still have to b very carefull with it. Its cermaic based so dont go throwing your speakers around :P
And burgundy i put up a pic of me too, and hey i havnt copped **** for it yet...
