Avgas is approx 100 Octane rating, because it burns slower that pump gas (higher the octane rating the slower it burns), it will run cooler. You will get approx 30 - 50 hours before you O2 sensor is shagged. You could advance your timing by about 10 degrees to get some more power back. The reason people run it is, if your compression ratio and or boost is quite high, the heat in the combustion chamber will get too hot and ignite before the spark plug fires (pre-igntion / pinging) avgas will stand more heat / pressure before pre-ignition. If your car is not pinging on 96 / 98 you wont make any more power. Avgas does not make more power, in fact it makes less. But, it allows you to run more compression / boost, which will overcome the power lost by the slower burning fuel. There are better types of petrol on the market, but they are about $6 per litre, avgas is dirt cheap, but is not that much better than 98 PULP. I hope this makes sense.

AVGAS shouldn't hurt your motor. Take Speedway forinstance, they run standard RB30's and just dump A race fuel mix in "7ltr's AVGAS, 6ltr's Mentanole and 1 ltr or Metho". I run leftover avgas in my n/a VL all the time! The only way the coppers will get you is the smell. There is NO funny coloured smoke cause it burns way better. If you pull your plugs out after running AVGAS the should be grey, same as your exhaust.
