01-09-02, 19:05 GMT+10#27 It really depends on how you look after it.
I have a VL which has about 320,000 kays on the clock, but the engine was neglected when I bought it at 300,000 kays,it blew smoke due to a lack of oil changes, the oil control rings were jammed in their grooves due to carbon build up causing oil consumption,I checked the compression ring clearance and they were in spec after all those kays.
The motor in it now has done 430,000 kays and is better than the younger motor was (I have also had this motor in another car for 200,000 kays ),it blows a puff of smoke on startup but the compression is still good, has a little tappet noise & doesn't idle like new,can feel it miss a slight beat, the only wear this motor was caused by oil seal wear on the crankshaft so a couple of speedi sleeves & new oil seals fixed that & the motor doesn't leak a drop of oil.
It could do with a head reco but I am saving up for a twin cam head swap & engine rebuild on the other motors bottom end (just new rings & bearings, etc),it will be going into the car despite the current motor having a good bottom end,it would have to be the oldest motor anyway so far mentioned though elsewhere I have heard of N/A VL's doing 500,000 kays
