Will be interesting to see what is found with your problem Maybe there is no insulation ( for sound ) under the gearstick boot cover. I drive around for a week with no center console ( was getting painted ) with no insulation and I could hear heaps of gearbox noise from it. Sounded kind of cool actually... the noise will deffinately be coming from your gearbox, It would probably be a good idea to put a bearing kit through it. At least it will extend it's life and is a lot cheaper than $2700 for a replacement box. i've had gearboxes go from "she'll be right" whine and grind to bearing failure-bang, teeth off gears in less than 5000km. drop the gear oil and check it for metal.

Well here's waht I found. The really loud rattling noise was the cover for the rear seal on the box. It had come loose and was touching the uni on the tailshaft, thus the tinny noise. Hammered it back in place, all sweet. As for the other noise as per the original post in this thread: I had my car checked and was told there are about 3 or so gears towards the rear of the box, related to 5th and reverse, that are in motion constantly while the clutch is out, no matter what gear you are in. Apparently what happens is you, or someone else, may accidentally try to go to reverse before stopping and grind the gears, which will chip teeth on these gears. The noise is the chipped teeth contacting as the gears turn. To me that says don't worry about it, although the guy said there's no saying if it will never play up, or go tomorrow. My box has had the noise for around 2-2/3 years according to the previous owner, so I'm leaving it, turning the stereo up. Hope this helps. Anyone running a mix of gear and auto trans fluids in thier box? What's the ratio? I'm finding upshifts to 2nd and 3rd aren't too smooth, unless you change verrrry slowly, then they go in pretty well. I also have to push the pedal right to the floor to disengage the clutch, think a bleed and possible pedal adjustment could be needed too.
