My first Calais had noisy lifters, The Royale is quiet, even when cold. The 2.0 engine is less prone to this problem as the head is lower and doesnt seem to run as hot, thereby eliminating the burn off of the additives in the oil which causes sludge build up, leading to oil starvation in the top end. The service intervals specified by Holden were WAY too infrequent, they suggest 10,000km which in city or combined cycle use, with the high viscosity (and low quality) oils specified is madness, they should be serviced every 5000km (7500km at the very most) if they are to stay quiet. Low oil pressure and noisy lifters are the legacy of this poor decision making on GM-H's part. Stopping the noise depends on your budget, Removing the lifters and cleaning them does work, but theres always the odd one or two that wont keep quiet. Commonly when the lifters are at the point of rattling, the rockers and shafts will be excessively worn as well (oil starvation problem as mentioned above). Replacing the lifters is really only a temporary fix as there will still be deposits in the oil galleries of the cylinder head and lifter blocks, as well as rocker shaft wear. In order to repair it properly will require removal and dismantling of the cylinder head, oil galleries cleaned out, new lifters, rocker shafts, and rockers. Drive in - drive out cost I believe will be somewhere around $1500 - $2500, as well as the very high chance the workshop wont carry out the proper bleeding procedure, leading to cooling system problems.

that sounds like you need alot of money just too fix something that makes an annoying ticking sound ! dont know what to do at the moment , im looking at the addictives as the cheaper alternative as $1500 - $2500 is a bit out of my budget when you can always buy another engine for that price ?! Quote: buy another engine for that price that will have exactly the same issues as the one thats in it. they are 22+ years old now and most have done more than 200,000km by now, add to that to NZ's apathy when It comes to servicing cars...........

Gets me thinking, what are the RB engines (since the VL RB30) like in terms of noisy lifters, are they any better? or will they be just as noisy once they are 20+ years old? (I dont know, I don't really hang around skylines ) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
