In the average Australian climate an engine oil cooler or a larger capacity oil sump is good for towing, drag racing, circuit racing and general abuse of hard driving with 4 mates in the car. Our experience has shown that the time taken to bring an engine to operating temps with/without and oil cooler is negligible. Maybe on a Merc in Europes colder climates, might be an issue with oil not coming up to operating temps. A slightly longer warmup time if any is certainly not worth more than the engine bearings and gaskets etc. e.g. Our latest Calais has an external oil cooler on it adding approx extra 2.5 litres to the oil capacity. It has instantly improved engine oil life (not changed every second meeting), Oil has less cross contamination from combustion/blowby, after several meetings now, a quick pull down of the bigend bearing and rods has shown them to look as fresh as a they were in the preassembly stages of engine build. It looks as though it hasn't even been run-in yet. I would tend to lean towards having an oil cooler than not. If you are thinking larger sump and the engine is still in the car, I would suggest fitting an oil cooler (correctly) as its easy to fit than a larger sump.

Mocal Thermostat FWIW On all my really abused cars I use an oil cooler. Oil comes apart if you get it too hot. Oil that comes apart means dead engine.

Car was boosted on the n/a motor for about 3 years I think it was. If I had a vl again I'd boost an n/a motor again no questions asked. I'd just make sure that I ran a catch can. And I would never run a turbo setup without at least both turbo ecu and injectors. Fuel pumps are the same, even check part numbers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
