42's come up ok on a big stall. There is a few tuning tricks etc but I mean if your running such a big turbo you want the revs to make the most out of it. I wouldn't bother with a 42 unless I could rev the snot out of it. On a basic street car the 62mm turbo is a winner.

Oh it is, but the point I'm making is don't stick a 3500 stall in it and expect it to be repsonsive.
I have a TO4e which no one has mentioned. It comes on boost really early and is punchy as hell around the street. What are these like compared to a 35/40 or the TO4z? I love the low down boost and midrange, it makes the car.

the OP needs a turbo for street duties with a few drag days a year. that's why i suggested hks gt-rs. sure it's tiny on a 3L engine but he will get maximum response. it sure beats waiting for a huge melon to spool up.
r the 35/40s alright with the standard plenum, ive wanted to chuck one in my vl for a while once i get engine rebuilt, keep a standard ish look how do they go with MX7s?

GT35 is a no brainer here.
Pretty affordable these days, plenty of punch, great response, hi or low mount it on whatever manifold you want.
Easy driving all round and an animal when you feel like it.
9's in full street trim on E85 and et streets in my car.. For a streeter/couple of times a year racer.. Couldn't pick a better turbo.

lol... a hi-flow would do the same job on a Rb30..you don't think a GTRS would suffer surge like a mutha****er??

Problem is everyone wants to run 8's on their standard engine in a 100% street car and you can't tell them otherwise. It's funny when you're mopping big power and big turbo cars with a basic set up and small turbo

True that, i reckon my wife car to take the kids to school, would probally beat my R31 on the street pretty easily when its finished unless its from a 160km+ roll on ..lol
cheers

I've just dropped from a GT40 to a Borg Warner S300 (which is smaller) in my RX3 and the car is a weapon with the smaller turbo. Rips on the street, before it was a laggy pig only good for the strip

I did the same thing. So much better having a turbo sized for your application.
Couldn't agree more with PROGMH.
A good friend of mine was running a 35/40 in his Calais which I drove from time to time. The thing would come on boost instantly and was so much fun on the street. It also ran 10.6 @ 131mph on the track in full weight spec (3 speed transbraked Jatco).
As stated a million times before, it all comes down to a complete driveline set up & tune.
FYI - the Calais I mention had standard exhaust & inlet manifold, with the air con still hooked up for effortless summer cruising! It would put to shame alot of '9 second' cars, because by the time they came on boost, they would be staring at the tail-lights!
I Agree with what Brett says in his posts and also Darren's alot of 8-9 sec vl's are quick down the strip but on the street a nice setup car with 35/40 etc will hand it to the 9sec car bc there so much more instant response, needless to say I was very happy how my vl went on the street with the gt42 but alot of that comes down to a good converter and tune etc!
