12-03-11, 05:51 GMT+10#41 autometer or speco is the way to go in gauges, all depends how deep your pockets go. Autobarn should have a couple different brands, you can also save quite abit going for a surf through ebay sometimes USA gear have good prices.

17-03-11, 12:15 GMT+10#43 Well yesterday, after redoing the inlet manifold gasket and making sure it sealed properly i started her up.
Took a minute or 2 of trying as it has been sitting there for about a month untouched. but it FINALLY starts and stay on. so pleased seeing it run again. Few little tweaks still to do, like idle speed and everything. but i think it is sorted out otherwise.
Once it starts and runs, next step is gearbox then fix little un-roadworthy bits all over it. Should be a fun 2 months before i get my license back

17-03-11, 18:31 GMT+10#44 coming along man. Id give those external venetians the boot... got some like mine
As for running cables through the fire wall, its easy. I ran a power cable through the wall on the passenger side.. just make sure you use a grommet. That was for thick gauge sub cable though, for thin gauge wiring you might be able to sneak it through the factory wiring gromet.. ask some boys who've got after market gauges in their car.

18-03-11, 12:53 GMT+10#45 yeah cheers mate. Finding those venetians in QLD is really hard, i'd love some, but at the moment im trying to protect the rear seats from sun damage and the car is in the sun all day for another 2 months.
So, what spot did you use to run the cables through? or did you make a new hole?

theyre not easy to find dude.. i was hunting for ages. the problem is they suit vb-vl so youre fighting all the other models for the same thing.
sorry i should of said... i ended up drilling a new hole in the passenger fire wall for my sub cable, approximately where the brake pedal would sit equivalently if you know what i mean

b*tch. I hear stories all the time o people who just stumbled across them at the wreckers or on some old ladies ****box.
@FLY-03L
So you just pulled the carpet back, drilled a hole al the way through and fed the wire through?
Thinking of getting a speco oil pressure gauge to fit with my other. Anyone know where i need to hook it up to? If its a mechanical one, where do i hook it up to?

20-03-11, 19:15 GMT+10#51 Yeah man. its important to run a rubber grommet otherwise the wires will move and rub along the sharp hole and eventually cut through the wire. Itll get a photo from the engine bay where i drilled mine tomorrow to give you an idea
typical rubber grommet if youre not sure what i mean..

That'd be great if you could get a picture of where you did it cos i dont wanna screw it up.

28-03-11, 17:53 GMT+10#55 aawwwww yeah.. Just won a set of venetians for the rear off ebay. Not too expensive either and up here in brisbane so i can pick it up.
Nothing much to update. Just trying to put little things back on the car like pieces of trim and stuff.
Also, got quoted $1400 today for my gearbox reco and fitment. Hurts to think i have to pay that much but might be the only option im left with

02-04-11, 19:10 GMT+10#56 Few pictures of the gauge holder im making. Timber will be covvered in aftermarket calais seat material so should hopefully look good.
At the moment it is going to be volt, water temp and oil pressure. I didnt really want an oil pressure gauge but i cant really think of any other gauge to install. How hard would an aftermarket fuel gauge be? Mine seems dodgy
Also fitted the visor, just needs to be painted.
And received a calais light eyebrow in the mail. Need to paint that too

03-05-11, 03:35 GMT+10#58 well today marks 35 days until i get my license back.
This is now to become a 'restoring project'. This week im buying my new 'love van' aka 2003 Kia carnival (heaps of room in the back )
So the calais is going to be unregistered and taken off the road for quite some time. I'll be now going through it top to bottom. because i have all the time i need
So im hoping this hobby will turn into something good.

I am playing around with the thought in my head of possibly putting a stock turbo setup on this, i have 18 months until off my P's and this is ample time to do the conversion myself. I would source the parts, and remove the engine from the bay to do all the conversion. I'm thinking a T03 turbo running at around 7psi should be ample for a weekender. and with that time frame i could ensure it was done correctly.
What does everyone think? I have been researching it a bit and it doesnt seem all that difficult to do, especially considering i will already be removing the engine / box for other reasons
opinions....
