so where to from here ? from the link ank posted it sounds like the government are dodging it left right and centre with stuff like this. Quote: Sports Minister James Merlino, unhappy with the 120-page feasibility study, commissioned another as ''there wasn't enough information'' in the first, according to his spokesman. then. Quote: Now the minister is refusing to release the results of the second study. and Quote: The government instead released a PowerPoint presentation to The Sunday Age that unveiled two interesting details. The cost of a track had risen from $38 million to $60 million and the government had decided ''it is difficult to ascertain what, if any, impact a new drag-racing strip would have on the economy''. then finally. Quote: The minister's staff say the sport can be staged at its former home at Calder Park. Mr Miocevich said it was ''dead and buried'' as a venue because houses had been built within 500 metres. The industry's favoured site is at Little River, but it is on land covered by an international treaty to protect wetland birds. so basically it sounds to me like the land the government had marked as land for a track is now under an international treaty to protect wetland birds. doesnt sound to promising to me. maybe some more rallys in the city blocking it off like the cabbys do when they want action might get the governments attention.

But maybe you are missing the whole point of the day and what it was intended for? The purpose of the exercise was for people to sign a petition to show the government there is community support for a new drag strip. Anyone who went there thinking it was going to be a Summernats event clearly went for the wrong reasons. Not having a go at you, but it was never meant to be a car show.

i understand the purpose, quite clearly, and im an avid fan of the industry, and its activities, and own many 'toys'. but personally, i think in order to achieve what we're ALL wanting, and i speak for the majority, is i think that such an event must 'rock the boat' so to speak, in order to be seen and heard. i think it should be taken to the street, just like any other rally, its the only real way the media, the population and the governemtn will really see us all. not tucked away in a couple of builidngs where nobody but those in the know will hear and see us. Imagine the same scale of people, and entrants, crusing down bourke st to parliament house, in an orderly fashion. Imagine what sort of exposure THAT would get? Again, i understand what it was about, and that a petition was signed, etc, and i did also sign it, along with 3 others i was with, BUT i think the whole thing had to be carried out in a different way, in order to make more of an impact.

I agree with what you say. Truthfully and sadly I might add, when it comes to signing petitions or having to run a static event like this, it kinds of shows desperation and the final straw in negoiating. Its pretty much saying to the government, every avenue has been explored and this is the last thing we can do to try and convince you is by bringing the public into it. Until Calder Park shuts its doors entirely, don't expect the government to contribute in building another venue. Not when there is so many other areas that need investment. 16,000 signatures in the scheme of things, is not much at all. I'm sure 10 times the amount would sign a petition for the disapproval of spending that amount of money on a track. Sad state of affairs in Melbourne really.

my opinion is while the pressure is still there keep applying it. blocking up the streets with racecar transporters and cars will certainly get there attension and tell them if nothing it will keep happening. sooner or later they have to give in and take it more seriously.
