One set is vl wagon 25 spline straight out of the car, the other is 1 inch longer than my 28 spline vl sedan axles.
I couldnt use the pictured 28 spline set because they wouldnt fit my sedans diff.. I have an LSD, maybe shorter or longer ones fit open wheelers or holden changed lengths..
The wagon was march 88 and the sedan was feb 88..
the longer ones are VN, you where obviously given the wrong axles
the housings in the background, closest vl wagon, furthest vn sedan.
5spdvl, my point was if carcrazy says vl wagon axles are longer, then it wouldnt be possible to put them in a vl sedan would it? which i have done, and happy to prove.
WankelD ill measure them for you tomorrow.

do it, youll see how wrong you are.

17-11-09, 06:49 GMT+10#43 If what you just said is true, then should the above housings be the same length? If a VN axle is the same length as the supposedly longer VL wagon axle?

17-11-09, 18:14 GMT+10#44 exactly, but the point being they housings are NOT the same, its simply cant be done.
WankelD, Pics;
top vl wagon, bottom vn sedan
measurements for you,
VL Wagon & Sedan,
drivers side 'pumpkin' to flange = 555mm
passenger side 'pumpkin' to flange = 485mm
VN Sedan & Wagon
drivers side 'pumpkin' to flange = 580mm
passenger side 'pumpkin' to flange = 505mm
bottom line is, I have done the work, carcrazy has not.

17-11-09, 18:47 GMT+10#45 i have tried to put vlt wagon axles in a sedan diff before with a 28 spline lsd from a vlt and they were to long they stuck out over 10mm far as i know it was a unmodified vlt wagon diff so either there is some odd wagon diffs out there with long axles and a different centre or the wagon diff had been lenghtened for some reason and had vn axles.

17-11-09, 19:10 GMT+10#46 thanks Psi_Wagon, theres my problem my driverside is 535 and my passenger side is 515. looks like im after a cheap housing now and cross fingers it will bolt up to my car
Thanks for all your help guys and vlturrrbo i hadn't once questioned or accused you of selling me incorrect axles i have said all along that they were genuine

My current thinking is that there are two width wagon diffs, Sedan axled ones and maybe the later end of line S2 wagons copped a vn wagon diff because they ran out of std vl wagon diffs or production started for the vn..
The wagon i pulled apart was a 1 owner very low km calais wagon owned by an old guy so im pretty sure no twits had got their hands on it, plus it had 25 spline axles so that rules out vn diff.
I almost walked into holden today to see if the vl turbo sedan / wagon have different part numbers listed in their master parts book. Im almost willing to bet there are two different vlt axles.
Who knows.. Im glad you pipped up though, ive been in the mechanical industry a long time now and i know what i did and what i saw..

again not correct as one of my spare diffs is out of my s2 calais wagon, late 88 and that is the diff i put the guts into my sedan housing.
wankelD sounds like u have a r31 diff man? from memory they are those measurements.
atleast youve got the right axles, you can get a vl housing anywhere!

Dude... I think you need to seriously get off your high horse...
Ive put a pic up of the calais wagon 25 spline axles and the set i had which are too long for my car but are exactly the same length as the wagons diff.. explain that?
As i also previously mentioned, i took them to a diff shop when the diff was built, the diff guy was asked what they are and he mentioned and compared them against a vn axle.
I guess maybe they could also be vn, vp or even vr who knows for sure.
They went straight into the original housing along with a new LSD centre and 3.9 gearset. All brakes, backing plates etc fitted on correctly and of course the wheel stud pattern was correct.
Also as ive said about five times, they were compared against my sedans original 25 spline axles and also against a set of brand new from holden vl 28 spline axles both of which were an inch shorter.
There has also been another post in this thread from a wagon owner striking the same problem.
Just because you have put wagon axles into a sedan diff doesnt mean there isnt different width diffs or you had sedan axles in your diff already.
Also consider holden made lots of changes on the vl series over its production life..
If i still had access to the wagon id pull an axle out right now and measure it to prove what i say is true but unfortunately it is now sold and long gone..
You've seen the pic, if those axles were suitable for my car i wouldnt of been forced to spend $660 from holden on another set.
Oh btw old thread, we had a big discussion about this in o4
http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showth...highlight=diff (http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=20959&pp=30&highlight=diff)
Anyway Im over arguing the toss about this.. I hope the poor bugger who started this post works out what the prob is..

17-11-09, 21:17 GMT+10#51 I like the idea of two different wagon widths, and the answer to a late '88 wagon having a sedan width diff is that the plant IT came from had stock of sedan width wagon diffs, whereas other plants didn't.

hmmmmm
