07-05-09, 21:43 GMT+10#41 finally got a chance to download the pics....did someone say they wanted it close to the roof There is just enough gap all round to pass the lining through and thats it.
main hoop & taxi bar was supposed to be for ISN00R's car the week after the accident, hence its a little rusty. i scotch brited it before putting it in so its back to the way it was. another rub with the scotch brite and a coat of paint and I will never have a problem.
the cage went in over a period of 5 weeks becuase he only really worked on it when i had spare time to give him a hand...absolute champion !!!
Raceline Fabrication [phone removed]...the last pic has a demonstration in the background of what he can really do, which is pretty much built a car from scratch...genius !!!!! .....and there is another one exactly the same under the cover
mulkers - as for material cost, there is approximately 15 metres of moly in my car, so I suppose you can get a rought idea from there

07-05-09, 22:20 GMT+10#42 SOmeone harras Colin (cmy747) to post pics of his cage, best cage I have seen in a VL to date in terms of design and fitment, waaaaaay more stealth and nice fitting than anything posted so far. Or Andy, as he has the same rear half in his 4 point I think from memory.

07-05-09, 22:29 GMT+10#44 Thankyou ISL33P for sticking to your word and delivering the goods. That's an impressive cage; quite similar to what I've discussed with Rai at FABRaiCATIONS (with the exception of gussets, roof diagonal, and B pillar diagonal). I enquired about doing exactly that with the rear bars through the parcel shelf, but he wasn't to keen on it due the bend in them (he believes it would crumple under impact).
Oh shit, I just noticed the background of the last pic!

Yes. Same colour, same side intrusion and blue floor bracing, but when I was the there were no tubs fitted, just cut outs awaiting them.

08-05-09, 12:02 GMT+10#45 im not fussed about stealth when it comes to safety, i now what i would prefer
dam right......the guys definately knows his ****. i might suggest just another bar to join the two rear ones, simlar to the one along the front window....but its up to him.
i am still tossing up putting ones to the front strut towers and a diagonal brace to go along with it

08-05-09, 13:59 GMT+10#47 Cheers for the pics ISLEEP.
Will the front part of that cage go through the speaker holes? It looks too far back to go through them?
Also what is that bit called thats welded to the front part of the cage with the holes in it? Or is it just reinforcement?
I gotta make a desicion very soon I was booted from WSID on Wednesday night...

08-05-09, 14:35 GMT+10#49 Hahaha, congrats sohc2.
My front ones are to go through the front speaker holes, with some trimming of the dash support panel at the speaker holes themselves. They're also modifying the dash to suit the bars.

I might suggest it again to Rai and see how he feels about it, but it sort of isn't your car when they get to designing the cage! It's justa pain otherwise, I woulnd't feel comfortable driving with anyone in the outer backseats spots.

08-05-09, 14:40 GMT+10#50 5spdvl, how come your caging your car, isn't it going to be a mild 25/30? Or are you gonna do track days?

08-05-09, 15:02 GMT+10#52 When you see a VL in a crash its a shock.. I would put a cage in a 11sec car.. Too many things can and do go wrong at speed with wheelspin just that little bit of insurance i say..
Be no means the extent to half of the people in this thread but a little 4point would keep me happy.

I'd like to do track days. At the moment I suppose my build seems mild because I haven't started any of the major "head turning" stuff (turbo, manifolds, computer, injectors, fuel, etc), but I would like to run a Motec M600 and Garett GT35/40 low mount, with RB26DETT forward facing plenum and 550cc injectors. That's just what I've decided on briefly, but when I get to the motor then I'll research and decide what I want to do then. But then, I suppose mild is different for everyone, hey Brad?
Bottom line is I'm 23, and this is my first ground up build. I've never owned a powerful car, and I don't want to die in my first one. Like [T]Matty implied, the VL chassis is woeful in a crash. It needs all the help it can get.

Yeh but wouldnt it keep the car stiffer? getting the power to the ground better.
and they wouldn't call them accidents of they were on purpose....
why does everyone like moly? its stronger yer but stronger so you can use smaller amount? is it the weight? easyer to weld and work with?
And price wise whats moly and other materials like? And what else is there to use? just mild and moly?

Sweet, wasn't picking dude, just asking...
I'll end up caging mine as well and my setup would be classed as mild these days too

09-05-09, 08:59 GMT+10#58 soch2 - they sure do....what a shame lol no more speakers...i dont like stereos anyway.
yeah they are reinforcements, it ties the cage in with the body a lot better, much like you see in rally and touring cars.
As for the rear bar at the window, just having a look it may be too close to the passengers head and I already have the bar right under the parcel shelf, so I would say that is plenty.
For the slightly extra cost of moly, the weight saving and more importantly the strength of it is definitely worth it.

09-05-09, 15:28 GMT+10#59 ISLEEP the cage looks quality man. If you get a chance could you also post a picture of the cage in the boot with that cross brace.
Im thinking if I tint my windows like the darkest tint and paint the cage black it would look very stealthy.
Get those Queensland boys to post pics
