I dont remember there ever being a boat thread on here and cbf searching so here it is I actually wanted some info on getting into cheap boating but we might aswell have a thread so everyone can share what they have/had, tubing, skiieng, fishing, anything boat related now my mates and i are looking into getting a runaround for some off shore fishing and summer fun (tubing), ive been looking at a couple on ebay but really have no idea what to look out for, i know the transom's are a problem area and need to be looked at carefully but what else is there? I wouldnt mind something around the 15ft size with about a 70hp outboard which should have plenty of grunt for tubing. Whats the go with outboards aswell? Which makes are reliable which arent? Any other info u wanna share chuck it up -there so was one already Marky Mark. Threads merged. 5spdvl Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

he's a marine mechanic got out on the water in a dingy last saturday managed to snap the propeller shaft and marooned on an island for an hour pulled the motor apart to get the shaft, which is now obsolete, anyone have anysuggestions of what to do?

If your on a budget i would definitely be looking at something inboard if your not going to be fishing that is. Reason being it's going to be cheaper for parts and there more reliable. Everyone i know who bought an early model out board has had nothing but trouble and end up being really expensive and hard to find parts. I bought a 16ft speed boat with a 350 chev in it for $5200 last summer, came with jackets and a tube as well. Reliable as well and now i am upgrading this year. Hope this helps, Mark

70hp might not be enough for tubing depending on the size of the boat. You can always fit a hydrofoil to get some extra lift but if you intend on doing quick turns then the hydrofoil can be dangerous if it "bites" flicking the boat around quite severely. You mentioned "offshore" fishing, these boats tend to be bigger with deep vee hulss, not really designed for "tubing" This is my boat It can still pull a tube and i have been 50km from shore on it, granted its a little tender at rest but it eats up chop (like all haines and signatures do well) its 4.7m so its small enough to handle by myself but still big enough to take mates out. Look around mate and be specific to what you want it to do, as a general rule the deeper the vee then the softer the ride less stability, if your mainly using it for tubing then stick with something with a bigger engine so your not having to thrash it to get it up on the plane

when i say offshore fishing i dont mean like 30kms out lol, maybe 1k absolute max, definately wont be taking it somewhere it cant handle the chop and i just used 70hp as a minimum for a 15footer, ive seen a couple clips on youtube and they seem to pull a single person tube ok but would probably want something maybe around 80-85hp this was the one we were looking at http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BERTRAM-15-FO...em1c1 4a1b22d (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BERTRAM-15-FOOT-HIGH-QUALITY-WORKMANSHIP-/120605225517?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Boats&hash=item1c14a1b22d) it seemed pretty much perfect for what we wanted to do but i just dont know whats the go with outboards, are mercury good?

Mercury are one of the big players, but I think the jap motors are better. Yamaha and Honda seem to be the most reliable outboards ---------- Post added 16-08-10 at 13:55 ---------- Find the boat you like then repower with something like this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/yamaha-outboa...ts_Accessories (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/yamaha-outboard-saltwater-series-115-/190431024699?pt=AU_Boat_Parts_Accessories)

something like that blows the budget out of the water i really just want some cheap and reliable, dont mind if its a lil rough around the edges coz il be able to tidy it up and give it a lick of paint if need be, but marine mechanics is something ive got nfi about so id rather have a motor i know is gonna be reliable yamaha and honda u reckon is the sh1t for outboards ey, il keep that in mind when looking what about johnson and evinrude? there seems to be a sh1t load of them popping up everywhere, are they any good outboard wise?
