This will help ya understand shock absorbers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_absorbers
As previously mentioned, worn shocks will significantly affect ride quality, handling and braking performance. New shocks for Commodores are pretty cheap, and pretty straight forward to fit. The rears are the easiest. I got my front inserts and new springs fitted for me (took complete strut assembly into a workshop cos I couldn't get the top nut off. That cost me a box of beer.) Apart from that I have rebuilt everything on my car myself - and before embarking on this project the most mechanical thing I had done was an oil change!
Cutting or compressing springs isn't really ideal - in both instances you need to make sure the springs remain captive. Compressing springs will lower the car, but cos the spring rate doesn't change so you end up with a very bumpy ride.
You have to learn these lessons for yourself, but you will eventually realise, like I have, that if anything is worth doing once, it's worth doing right! Often works out cheaper in the end too!
4sakenvl; try Autolign for prices, they are very competitive and sometimes give trade price if you ask nicely! I have the same setup as calais3L, although I am yet to drive on it! Monroe GT gas shocks and Dobi Superlows. Check his earlier posts in this thread for his driving impression. I think you can get the springs for around $350 and four shocks for not a lot more.

Yea thats what ma berlina has lol ride quality is rough and bumpy, drive a standard late model car like ma mrs corolla and it handles like a ferrari compared to it lol. I rang BNT today and got some prices for dobi springs and kyb shocks not too bad priced but ill try see if get trade. Ajustable panhard rod is like over 500 hundy retail!!! cheers for the info NZGTS was helpful. I'll give autolign a try tommorrow see if can do better than bnt. cheers

You could do that, but I'm guessing you'd need to be a good welder and have basic engineering skills. Adjustable panhards also have a bit of a kink in them to leave extra room for a larger exhaust system.
Rare Spares have a Nolathane panhard listed for $278.22 and a non branded one for $225.00. These usually come with new bushes too. Autolign stock the Nolathane branded ones, and they are also the distributor for Nolathane products.

I'll throw in my two cents here aswell.. Whiteline superlow springs with new Monroe shocks all round plus a Whiteline adjustable panhard rod. It's my combo on the 8, definitely not the lowest VL around but it is real nice with fast paced cornering and all the crappy rough roads around.
Give these guys a call: SAS or Suspension Autopart Specialists
