I have a feeling it won't be the LS1 or LS2 blocks that will be doing the damage. Look out for the LSX and LS7 427 Twin turbo's coming out soon. Next few years will be interesting in the HP hero's challenge.

Next few years will be interesting in the HP hero's challenge. the ls7's will do some damage, they have the cubes and the easy torque from the 7 litres.. there overall a great and potentialy easy to make quick motor.. they wont even need the forced air ind, just n/a and stock from the states are crazy..

Recently fitted a 7 ltr crate motor to a VX ute, slotted a little cam in it and made 362kws at wheels, torque was that high it it overheated the retarder on the dyno and ripped the tread of the brand new tyres, not like a burn out, ripped the tread off in chunks. I dont know what the crate motor cost but stock engine bolt in drive away. Looks just like an LS1 to anyone else. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

FRASHD- i know what u mean on the dyno.. i saw an orange vx on the dyno, might have been blo-402 and the tyres got demolished.. we were gonna put an ls7 in our landcruiser because they got the cubes for torque.. but instead we got a torquier 454.. heard good results from thema nd if ne one wants one.. contact eagle auto spares..good people to deal with..

well if you're talking stock VT-VX 5.7 automatics, my executive with 3.08 diff, slightly firmed up auto and unknown engine mods (162rwkw worth anyway), will beat them time and time again, even an automatic VY Maloo up until about 140-150km/h or so, which is usually when i give up Manuals are another story though, a mate has a 6 speed SS with difillipo's, a twin 2.5 zorst and a tune with 245rwkw, and it leaves mine for dead in every gear unless i get a lucky start on him. After driving it around though, my opinion is that the 5 litre is a much more streetable option and more fun to drive around legally, though i've just about had enough of mine and am just about ready to make the move into twin cam turbo territory! stock LS1 powered cars are not too quick, read all the wheels and motor mags, the average 1/4 mile time would be flat 14's. This is easily achievable in a 5ltr, plenty have done so with decent cam, extractors/exhaust, stall, shift kit, LSD and short rear ratio. As mentioned earlier the price you pay for an older 5ltr equipped car is alot less than a newer LS1 powered car so theres alot more $$$ that can be spent on the 5 ltr to have it run decent HP. Even to source a 5.7, rip out the 5ltr and drop the 5.7 in would be a waste as the money that would be spent on the motor/box/ custom job would be ridiculous. Yes we all know the 5.7 will put out more power in the end but thats what you get with extra displacement. Then you could get a 6.1ltr Hemi that would mop the floor of any LS1 with the right mods. At the end of the day you can make decent power with any V8 (yes even a 253 but why bother) and the more cubes you got to play with the more power you'll make. have a look what goes on in the states, 427 is borderline small block and you have 572CI muthas pumping out 900HP N/A, i wish i lived in the states sometimes

^^ i was interested in what makes a 5ltr more streetable and fun to drive legally?? Having had a 5ltr VT SS AND now a 5.7ltr Calais, i found the 5.7 to have a much better feel on the road with both acceleration and punchiness. I think if you refer to the original post he wants to know with minimum cost possible how to do this. IMO, its not worth the money

Go in a VT 5.0 and a VT series II with a gen III. You have to compare apples for apples. VT's are heavy. VX 40 kg lighter. Extractors, exhaust, shift kit (if the auto isn't stuffed), stall, different ratio in rear. Lets not forget tune, What would that cost???? This is with a standard cam and valve train I take it. That's maybe 160kw's!! All that would cost over 5,000. Speaking from recent experience... L76 crate motor, 4300. Current HSV Auto (4 planeterys) 1400- 1500 trade price. ECU 275 Brand new. PCM loom 800. 4300 1500 275 800 = no real expensive Hatfield kit for VL to VS can be purchased. Done right this combo can be EPA compliant, and engineered.

But remember those mods in conjunction wih an LS1, with the right package, well you can push 11's. Also, I don't know what the gearboxes and diff's are like behind the 5L, but if they are looked after behind the 5.7L, they will hold on for a long time running 11's, unlike my own box, which is f*cked due to not being looked after and having the shift pressure's set way to high! Jason.

IMO, its not worth the money yeah i got the 'fun to drive part' imo a 5 litre has more seat of pants, but i had no idea how he came to the 'more streetable' opinion yeah you're right its not worth the money, i'm a holden V8 boy through and through, but even i can admit, ls1's are absolutely piss cheap to mod, great bang for buck, and for the same amount of dollars will more than likely cream a 5 litre. but going back to the original post, if you want a 5 litre to perform, its not going to be cheap at all. hey if you can afford it though, go nuts, i know i am Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

ok to the LS1 boys, lets not forget no one is saying they are crap and without mods they dont make power. With the mild mods you can get most 5ltr cars to break 13's no worries and if you do the work yourself can easily be done for a couple of grand. For example my car has 3.45 LSD (700), cam and lifter timing chain (350), extractors (400), 2 1/2 inch (300), intake (250), carb rebuild (50), stallie (500), trans rebuid and shift kit (950) all up roughly 3500 and the car should run flat 14's or quicker tuned right with proper traction. Recently drove a mates VY SV8 manual and it didnt go as hard as i thought these things went. yes we know if you put 3 grand on a LS1 it will beat the 5ltr with the same mods, BUT the point is getting the 5ltr to pull alot better for cheap is possible which is what the thread starter wanted to know in the first place. once again no one is saying the LS1 is ****, repeat no one is saying the LS1 is **** so why dont we all relax on the 5ltr vs LS1 stuff, and as ive stated before with the extra displacement the LS1 would have to out perform the 304 any time of the day. This thread starter wanted to know what he could do with what he's got so helping him would be good.

This thread starter wanted to know what he could do with what he's got so helping him would be good. I know what your getting at.. I see and tune alot of cars that people spend big dollars on a 5.0 be it Holden or Ford for a sh1tty 30 kw's. And the arguement on displacement doesnt stand up. 350 chev first or second gen or factory stroker VS GTS 5.7 are no where near a standard LS1. port design, piston skirt, fuel economy, etc, etc. I am not anyones accountant, but why bother trying to make a old school 5.0 beat a newly designed LS1. thats like turbo charging the first holden grey motor. F Uck that. bolt an RB30 in it. Besides anyone can make a car feel quick by lowing the diff ratio and fitting a stall. Slam a set of 4.44:1 in a sticky VB and you'll think you're in a fire breather upto 80. A wheel is round.... don't try re-invent it.
