guys, i just sold a VT 5L SS. The only reason i bought it, is because I couldn't get a Gen3 when I was on my P's. In hindsight, i should have waited the 6months till i was off my P's and bought a VX SS or even a VY SS (if i had the coin). In terms of dollar per kw, it's bucketloads cheaper to get power out of a gen3. Also, they are kinder on petrol that the 5L. Where the 5L wins handsdown is the sound! In saying that, you can pick up clean VX's with a Gen 3 relatively cheap nowadays. Cheers.

haha nuh just after something that goes pretty good in comparison with other v8s in its range and slighty comfortable such as a calais or statesman. how do the 5.7l get better fuel economy than a standard 5l anyway? if thats the case i might aswell wait 4 a vtss cheers

G'day, I'm new here and to V8's. Always been a 4wd bloke... Instead of startin another topic, just thought I'd ask here. Is there any difference between the VR 5L and VS 5L?? I'm considering a nice VR SS. Thanks a heap.

the gen3's get better fuel economy via head design and a whole bunch of different technologies applied from years of development (oh, and they are a chev engine as well). Being an alloy block, things are lighter, therefore they spin easier. Also, the gearboxes are a lot friendlier. Drive a holden 5 speed and the clunky pos is a dinosaur compared to anything else. That's just my opinion based on experience. Otherwise, and this will be sacrilege, save up and get an Xr6 Turbo *GASP*!! A good mate has an F6 with 300kw atw, in excess of 700nm of torque and still returns on avg 10l/100kms.

Thanks a heap. only small things really, the skirts were slightly different, they didnt have airbags, ec.. however, there is a big difference in the series 3. vr ss runs a hyrolic motor, and a T5 gearbox if its manual. VS SS series 3 runs a roller motor, and a hyrdolic getrag 5spd gearbox they also run sequential injection ec..

yours would be early 99 which is series 1. no vt 5ltr was in series 2. Series 2 were ADR as a LS1 and not a 5ltr.

Everyone gets so confused over something so simple lol. Orange indicators in tail lights = not worth racing. White/clear indicators in tail lights = don't even try racing. Easy *comment made in jest Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i think the piston slap problem occurred right up to the end of the vx series. I remember looking at a vx ss and the owner had to get holden to sort it out at around 80,000k.

I've personally always liked the look of the VS Calais, nice white over silver.. But the VT 5.0L is a far better engine. Roller cam, bigger heads, it's the best of the 5.0L.. If it's true about the SIII VS being the same engine as a VT, then that'd be one I would go for.. Good luck mate..

vt V8 motor obiously owns a vs (pre series 3) as for the cars dunno never owned either... i gotta admit vt's arent my favorite shape standard though hsv's look very nice. VT senator signature is one of the best lookers hsv have made imo... VS still to this day is very sleek.
