330 rwkw or in old money 442 bhp is a bit of power-
depends on what u want an also ask yourself the power to weight ratio of a vl to a vt onwards as the late model cars weight a bit compared to vl's
+torque wise
ls2 are the next engine to see big power gains-give a year or two and u will see fiqures of 400 rwkw in n/a engines + when people work out whats going on with them
also try buy like a vx series 2 engine- engine no should start with vf01 or later 01 means the year etc etc if a ls1 engine is what u are after
comes with a better manifold+later improved heads-slighty better refine inner parts.
decent ls1 will get easy 250-260 rwkw with the basic stuff exhaust, tune mafless, cam+springs.
cam+springs are very very important
I always forget about the manifold changes... I bought a fast 90 but yeah the LS6 version flows better. Now also remember with all the engines that where rebuilt under warranty some vt series cars ended up with LS6 manifolds and some VX cars ended up with LS1 series manifolds. Something to bear in mind. Only way to no or sure is to check the part number which is on the manifold its self.
[QUOTE=Sinister]people throw power figures around here stupidly... power is useless if you cant put it down, and you dont want to put too much down for the street or you'll kill yourself or someone else. some ppl having 200-250rwkw with ceptors and stuff, i mean really...
250-300rwkw is a LOT and if your driveline and tyres can use it then its going to be a lot of fun more than you will need[QUOTE=Sinister]
When im quoting power figures and what times it may do, I expect people to take into consideration setup. If you have that kind of power and dont realise that you need a suspension setup to let it hook-up for that 1.4 60fter for a 9.0 pass then you shouldnt have that kind of power. Easy way for newbies to understand this.. a v8supercar has 620hp in a 1200kg car. runs mid 11's at the strip. The 60ft is terrible but the mph is high for that time. So basically of your car runs a 2.5sec 60ft but runs a 120mph its basically telling you that you need to whack some 90/10's in it and bolt some decent tyres on the ***ker.
Most strokers(402's) with a decent cam and nice heads make about 330 to 345rwkw so to make 384rwkw on a 5.7 it would want the worlds angriest cam and need to spin it to 9000rpm. That may be flywheel KW's.......
An LS1 in a VL would be abesolutely awesome. Not only would the engine be in a lighter car, but the LS1 also weighs 50kg less than an RB30ET from a VLT(so I've heard, and it hasn't been mentioned in this thread). I have a VX II R8 Clubsport, and you can feel the torque moving through the body in it, well I can imagine how awesome that would feel in an LS1 powered VL!
In a VL, the LS1 would probably only need an exhaust, correct diff gears and a MAFLESS tune or LS1 Edit to abesolutely haul. I can't imagine the result with a cam and valvespring package, set of heads, or even with forced induction.
Would make a very, very legit skid car. I honestly don't see that it would cost a fortune either unless you..
a) brought a brand new engine and gearbox
b) decided that you wanted a manual 6 speed box over the 4 speed auto.
You can pick up LS1's with the engine loom, around 50,000kms and a 4 speed auto for around $4000. You'd need a custom tailshaft, engine mounts, cross member mounts for the gearbox, etc etc but I would think that a budget of $10,000 could possibly do it?

i think it's up to him now on what he wants to do
he has been told enough, power figures between aussie v8 and 5.7 ls1 onwards+price+future power gains.

Too true.....Although I'd like to think its funny it certainly isn't when a car starts to hang out at 100mph....

haha its funny as f u k after you clean your pants. I went for a blat in a VZ R8. It was 402ci with a pair of 35/40 high mounts. On 265 rears it was a any gear any time kind of car. He got tail happy rounding up a semi. It wasnt until he got off the loud peddle that it stopped. No one in the car said a word for about 5mins. Later that day he asked if i wanted to have a steer. I politely said "nah mate way to much car for me"

LOL..... that thing sounds like a mutha ***ka
I'll stick to 346 and procharger....

Duke & cwreck - Definately no forced induction on the maloo. I'll get the mods that he's done up soon - and its at the wheels.
Jason - Yeah true, from what people are telling me in here, and others along with an E36 Coupe with an un-touched LS1 doing 11.5 that I know of, the LS1 with no mods, just exaust, and tune with haul, like you say..
Yeah thats alright, but like I said, I'd just buy a wreck, take what I need and sell the rest. Also heard that the TREMEC 5 or 6 Speed Man that the BA XR8's came out with are pretty unbrakeable - ??
Thanks again for all the comments and advice fellas..
-Todd
Duke - With the 402 - thats just off the f u c k ing air! Sounds like the two blokes in street commodores a few months ago - one was VX GTS stroked to 383 - then TT. The other was the same but twin blown I'm pretty sure. 800 odd KW, and 600 odd KW. Way too much, how would you drive the thing..
Yeah them 2 VX GTS were legit. I can't remember the name of the LS1 engine in the GTS (someone already mentioned it) but it does come MAFLESS tuned from factory, with a few other goodies as previously mentioned. I'm not sure if the GTS' LS1 has a different Cam but?
Also, you have to remember that Holden infact DETUNED the LS1 from it's stock GM state when they decided they wanted to start putting them in commodores. I think they have 300kw or more as a stock engine. That 300kw figure is at the engine by the way, but we know this is more than enough to push heavy 1800kg Clubsports and SS' into the mid 12 second barrier and better f they are correctly setup, so imagine it in a what, 1200 - 1400kg VL?
Jason.

heres a picture of my setup, its just mocked up at the moment but you get a good idea of how everything sits
cheers guys

now we're talking!
mate that looks SWEET the LS looks like a factory fit in there... what diff/trans/rear end e.t.c u running for the car??? that is going to be an absolute weapon.

thanks guys, i spose it really depends on what your own expectations are of hard work, for me it hasnt been hard if anything more time consuming.
dule57tt..thanks mate yeah well i wanted to push it into the next level, its something pretty different to whats out there atm.
sinister..
the box i will be running is a 2 speed im gonna get imported from america, which will have most of features any 2 speed will have, and as for rear end, im just gonna leave it be for a little while to get around in then ill go a full 4 link/strange coil over setup using standard tub size
two89
yeah it went in very very easy, v8 k frame, rod shop enginbe mounts then drop it in, im not very happy with the postion of the engine thowe so its going to be moved back about 10cm, and thats without cutting the firewall lol so u get a good idea of how farward it sits, cause atm the sump is restricting it from going back anymore
shaun
Geez. Got a pic of where it sits exactly in the bay
(from the back)
That's ALOT of room for it to move back! Glad it went in fairly easily, all ive heard is horror stories of how difficult it is!
TWIN TURBO LS1 IN A VL!!!
Can I ask how much it's all cost you so far mate? Or, what would you opinion be on the cost if you were to simply drop in an LS1 from a wreck with an auto or manual box?
Thanks in advance, Jason.

Very nice Shaun - that thing with be a weapon when she's all done.. Very tough.
What model LS1 did you chose?
Glad to hear it went it easy for ya mate, hopefully same goes for me!

In the VT GTS it was a Calloway motor, not sure about the other GTS models though..
Yeah sinister said that the GTS came out with a bigger cam from factory..
I guess they thought they had to, so they could use the LS1 for 5 models.. and gradually bring the power up..
Ha, yeah the thing would fly, I'd like to see how much Shaun's TT LS1 puts out when she's all done!

That's hang the f*ck on!
See if the RB boys can catch you....... you'll be making 400+ RWKW on 8psi with your street tune with pump fuel and full exhaust...... LOL
Really keen to see this cars progress..... I too done an LS1 conversion into a VL for a friend of mine.... its a nice thing .. he just needs to get his act together and finish it....
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
thats a fucken insane setup
love it!!!
awesome job.. cant wait to see it done and hear it screaming!!
always loved tuff 8's in vl's there's never enuff, since ive just about sold the vnss (which i thought of putting in a ls1 into but another mate is doing it now be finished in afew months) i was looking at doing a nice 355 stroker + charger or turbo in a vl body.
more pictures of that car/motor please!!!
what turbo's you running?? (might of been asked, sorry if i missed it).
thats quality.. once again, keep it up and keep us posted!!!
cheers guys
aquabat - not sure on the exact price but its acutally been pretty good considering, i mean i do everything my self in my garage with help from mates so ive got free labour. but i payed 4400 for the complete conversion, engine was out of a vy calais and had 33,000 on it, engine is micky clean inside and out, for 4400 i got engine, box, ecu, maf and loom..so everything you pretty much need
calais355 - any dramas ya have mate just ask away, with any conversion u will allways have them but ya get that on the big jobs lol
eat-30t - ya pretty spot on there mate chuck a pair of turbos on a v8 and your gonna be making a lot of power very quickly, i wanna baby it for a little while and get the most out of the engine and just have a little fun before i build a more serious engine to throw some boost into it.
scamer - im running twin gt3540 1.06a/r
