I have driven and been a passenger in numerous 9, 10 and 11 second cars, and at least 5 11 second capable RB25's. In fact I was in a KEas auto equiped VP commodore that has a dead stock RB25 in it, with my turbo kit, front mount and exhaust, and it made 360-370rwhp through the auto on less than 20psi. He's been thrashing it(and I mean thrashing it!!) for about 6 months with 400rwhp through a manual, and honestly the car isn't laggy, drives beautifully, and it even has a 1.06 rear and makes full boost at 4500 instead of 4000rpm like the .82.
A keas box behind a stock 25, with GT35, 3.9's, exhaust and cooler, on 20psi would go clos to cutting a 10.90 in a full weight VL. Andy did it with 390rwhp on the same dyno this VP made 370 on.
My best advise though, is get a stagea or Neo engine, they have solid cams and GTR rods, stronger from the factory.

id have to agree, a stock supra with the right goodies with out do an rb26/30 on most days. Far better designed engine the 2JZ

the 2jz has twin cams the rb30 has one but they are the same displacement, just a rough example to drive both and understand why a single cam will never hold a candle to two.
i am under the impression that once you place a 26 head on the bottom end of an rb30e you get very similar internal and head specs to that of a 2JZ, but you average 200,000km thrashed out vlt rb30et is no comparison, it's barely worthy of being the starter on the toyota engine haha jks

The RB26/30 is actually a better engine from a power potential viewpoint than a 2JZ, the 26 heads have shimless buckets which are also bigger in diam than the 2j, can take more camshaft lift, bigger valves, and the heads flow about another 10% over a 2j, including after porting. The area the 2JZ sh1ts all over the nissan is in terms of actual engine strength, where the stock block can take over 1000hp without grout filling, 1800hp with grout filling, the stock crank and pistons are awesome, it is just a better BUILT engine, but power wise, the RB is still king.
6BOOST
Once again 6BOOST has told it exactly like it is.
The 2JZ is a much more solidly built engine. The biggest problem is finding a manual gearbox for it. I believe something like 98% of the 2JZ's all came with automatic transmissions, and if you want a manual gearbox, they are extremely rare and difficult to find. And it will probably cost a lot more than the engine when you eventually do find one.
At least with the RBs there is a pretty wide choice of relatively low cost alternative transmissions, if you cannot afford the 25DET box.
oh wow i had no idea the 2jz ran bucket shims, i thought that was iscolated to 1ggte etc, Kyle could you explain to me why Toyota used bucket shims in their heads? I can't work out any advantage apart from being more expensive to reco?
either way we agree dual>single
sure single are making numbers and times, but imo the only reason workshops run them is to appeal to the common vl customer what can be done with most of the original motor, as not everyone wants to fork out extras for head swaps e.t.c (plus it aint cheap!) but obviously performance (and on a lesser scale, drivability) wise they are a bottleneck... the rajab race car has an rb26 head doesnt it?

There is only one advantage, and a whole heap of disadvantages to solid buckets plus shims.
In a high rpm race motor, it may be possible to get some valve float, for instance, a brief over rev might do it. Now if you have hydraulic buckets, they just take up the clearance once the valve train springs apart.
This is known as the dreaded lifter pump up. The hydraulic lifters are not really the problem, but that is what everyone calls it. So if you fit hydraulic lifters to you race motor, it might cause a significant loss of power until the lifters can bleed back down again.
But solid lifters can valve float, then as soon as the rpm drop back, all is well again. So for a serious very high rpm race engine, solids might give that slight edge.
For a street motor, hydraulics are by far the best because they constantly self adjust.
thanks to all the ppl that responed to my thread and for all the info that i have now gained , my budget is about 10k but this is to do motor , gearbox and diff , but this is only to get me started . thanks to 6boost for all his info on the rb25 too ive priced a half cut for a rb25 , $ 3200 motor and box , so might start there and work on that. again thanks to all the info guys cheers

from a road driver/ track(circuit) persective
rb30et is average
rb25det better
rb26dett **** loads better
rb30det (25 head) even better
rb30dett (26 head) a tad better at tad better
rb30dett or t with a fully ported head/solid lifter head are the best but it cheaper to do the works to a gtr engine than a 25 head
not everyone wants a drag car, circuit racing is far better at showing what makes a engine worthy of road work or spirited driving
also the 25 and 26 head there is not much in it but due to the gtr haveing solid lifters and better intake/throttles = better than a 25 head
guess im the only person here who things a lap time is worth 10 times a drag time!
its a shame the world revolves around drag racing when 99% of the time a circuit engine will be better

for sure i agree, ive never even done it and i know it would be an absolute blast and drag racing in comparison would be like watching grass grow.. but it obviously costs a lot more to do

That is an excellent decision.

I whole heartedly agree
Whatever you do, DO NOT use a greddy inlet plenum, they kill response by a good 500rpm(tested), and the factory runners flow over 50% more than the head anyway. If you want to simplify cooler piping and run any type of plenum, the best I have seen is the Plasmaman top half, followed by a JD custom. Either one of these will work awesome. See if you can swap some parts off the engine for other stuff you will need as well, maybe try and swap the stock AFM meter, turbo, and manifold, maybe even the factory computer, to the importer your getting the engine off in return for a Z32 or Q45 AFM, that way the only things you will need to buy is a power FC, which are cheap at around $1100.
Drop me a PM if there is anything on the engine I can help with, advise wise or other.
