For low boost applications though, there is no need to o-ring the block or heads, copper gaskets, head studs etc. We are talking about budget builds and on a budget it is very easy to push a turbo V8 to run 10s with just using Felpro o-ring gaskets, as it will be on around 10-12psi and spinning to 6500-6700rpm (maybe even less). Of course, if you want peace of mind and down the track plan on pumping large amounts of boost and revs, o ringing etc is the way to go. Also, haven't you noticed there are ALOT more turbo charged 8s now than before. LS1s have really started it all with off the shelf kits yielding enough power to push a full weight commodre to 10sec passes with a stock engine. People are moving away from NA motors due to the fact that they are more aware now of what a turbo can do and how easy it does it. The rotor and 6 cylinder guys know all to well what a great bang for buck upgrade a turbo is. Not only that, turbo prices have come down considerably with a large frame bush turbo that is suited to a V8 can be bought for between $1000-$1500 and support up too 1000hp. Machining costs do come into play, but that comes down to how far you want to go. The Skyline above is a prime example of a how easy it is for a stock 308 to make power with a turbo strapped to it, without it really being stressed. I went through the progression of NA rotary then to 13BT.Now i have an NA engine which i did because i've never done before, but let me tell say, once you go turbo, you will always wonder why you spent all that money on a grumpy, inefficient NA engine. Trust me, i wonder why i spent this money, when for the same amount, i would have a more efficient, more powerful engine. I think the reason why turbos have taken a long time to get into the V8 market is because alot of people still think it is some dark force that is so hard to understand. That, as well as the majority of V8 guys are neanderthals and think old school is the only way (no offence guys) P.S And thanks to Sinister for opening this can of worms Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

alright so i've got a 304, stock, with the injection removed. im dumping it into my tonner. im gonna use a VN heads dual plane, and a bg or holley carby. how much do you guys all think i would be looking at to build/get built a turbo setup that'd push 11's all day, everyday?

Dont get me wrong, its a lot of fiddling around and to me thats one of the major problems with v8s and turbos, the lack of room and general *******ness of feeding a turbo from a V engine. This is very rough... but lets try Factor in the parts first, the turbo, u want a gt40 or even 35r for around $1500ish. then youll need the manifolds made, like said u can reverse and mod the stockies for a little wad of cash. there u have say $600 ish for that? maybl less, theres your turbo bolted and sitting up. then youll need the exhaust ran from there to your system, youll ideally want a cooler, low boost or not.. few hundred for cooler and 600ish for piping.. youll prob want a BOV, few hundred, good wastegate 500. You'd prob want a boost controller of some sort too.. plus vclamps and so, thats your turbo done... now it comes to induction and modding the carby and hat to hold and accept the boost. carby no doubt wont be cheap, but u gotta do that no matter what combo if u want power. That nissan was a car here in Adelaide, it was just running a shagged out 308 bottom end. with the rads on the big ends around the wrong way but yea that Jakes performance yellow LH torana is friggin tuff. on the subject of V8s being un efficent at making HP, actually the can be quite efficent at making HP, it all comes down to the BSFC (brake specific fuel consumtion) rule. I went back and thought about. Mr.tuffer is right..and wrong. The reason there are **** all turbo v8's is because when you can't do it yourself, you basically get sold a engine package from a company, pretty much 99 percent will sell your a old school atmo combo. The other problem is it seems to be all or nothing, you just can't seem to have a nice cast piston/a9l rod 500-600rwhp, 308-355 pump fuel everday combo...no if it is turbo you must have 1000hp, twin Gt3540's and trap 150+mph, theres no in between combos around except in the LS1 bolt on world wheres theres plenty It is just up to companys to research some "cheaper" combos using 3540's, single Gt42's/chinese KKR twin kits like the ls1's and minimalist type engine mods to just hold the package together. It is far from hard, it is actually easy when it comes to the later model 304's, just have to have half a brain , and someone that knows how to tune it. The R31, 308 didn't last long BTW, i talked to the guy that bought it not long after it was built and it cracked a piston and blew the trans straight away, the original owner bought it back and is rebuilding the motor and it has a glide now, nice car. cheers darren

thanx for the leads guys ill make some calls and see how we go i think i will use the 304 crank and get some reasonable rods, and forged pistons and rings and berings, get a mate who builds sprintcar engines to assemble and balence and see what happens

Traction for traction a properly matched turbo setup will flog the **** out of a tough atmo engine, even if the they have the same peak horsepower the turbo will have plenty more torque under the curve..and torque wins races , centrifugal superchargers on the other hand are a different kettle of fish the area under the curve is dismal compared to a turbo setup. cheers darren Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah i can vaguely remember that skyline running no cooler and 18psi through a stock 308 and stock trimatic. It was for sale for just under 20k from memory with a 10 sec time slip... wooh... 1 pass.

For some reason, most people who want to build a turbo V8 want it to be some hp monster. Just take a look at the 600hp atmo packages from various places, they are charging $17K+ for these engines!!! It is so easy to make that power with a turbo and will cost considerably less. Or lets look at one of the most common holden setups that guys go for, like a stroker with a crane 288. Most setups like these are around the 500-530hp mark. Think of what is needed to make an honest 500hp+ NA from a holden.....very good set of heads, manifold, solid cam, stroker bottom end, extractors/exhaust etc. Now look at the setup in the skyline, which was a stock 308 engine and it made the same amount of power, if not more. Ok, it cracked a piston, that's understandable because it was stock, but just put a set of forgies and decent rods in and it would last.

when i read jakes combo it was interesting to see he ran trw pistons, now i assume these werent custom made so they must of been a shelf piston. I looked and looked and saw in their catalog they had a 4" piston with a .912" pin and around the right comp height for a holden rod.. i think i found the piston, its actually a ford piston hence the .912" pin so im guessin he just got that bored out and new pins and done.. those pistons used to be able to be bought for under $500! dunno about now.

A set of hypertech casties and some a9l rods and a intercooler with pump fuel instead of the avgas and it would probally last. I think the skyline sold for 12 grand in the end. A mate wanted to buy just the motor but i told him not to bother as you could build something yourself but better for the money or a little bit more, it was a good setup, but turbo limited with not much room to move to get more power out of it, without starting again, and he wanted to run 9's aswell cheers darren

would u even need to change a stock cam, honestly... the area is so new that it hasnt been fully tested, the ls1s with stock cams and turbos make crazy power, should be same deal with a 5litre... stock cam, double chain roller at least, new lifters, new pushrods.. stock heads... see how she goes!

I think you might be right, there was talk here or somewhere they where a off the shelf pistons costing way under $1000 and held a heap of grunt. cheers darren Well cams definitly make a difference, i think the LS1 cams LSA is perfect already for a turbo. But your right, they woudn't be needed really, it would be one of the few things you would play around with later on a basic combo. cheers darren

didnt he change to a H beam rod (the torana) Sinister, you prob could keep the stock cam, but it would be more benificial getting a grind to suit the turbo application

apparantly he bent some a9l rods.. but i think they still lasted a fair while, were they even shotpeened??? then he went scat h-beams, which still would of been the same 5.622" length

this is a great thread, so just for the sake of it i will keep tabs of what this gt4088 set up on the 308 ends up costing maybe take me a while but at the end we can see what bang 4 buck HP we end up with i will go for a mere 10psi,
