24-01-06, 17:55 GMT+10#41 Yes.. u've learnt the expensive way and i've learnt how to pull a vl diff out of ur car and put it back in 3 times... aswell as how to pull down the centre, clean it and put it all back together.. hahaha...
My lsd is pretty tight, wet or dry it still chirps and shudders the rear end turning out of streets same as my bros minispool did. i've done heaps a skids and put ****loads of load on it wet and dry and its still fine, yet to let even feel like open wheeling on me.
LSD's are certainly the way to go on the street for all round enjoyment, cruisng, drifting, dragging. as long as u get someone with half a clue to build it, or u opt for one of those kaaz centres as mentioned think they are like 1400 aswell. ? but prolly never wear it out.
Minispool is more suited to minimal street cruising, straight line work on the strip, ppl say the vlt diff is tough as, but anyone running 28spline axles with slicks at the strip or 18's with good tyres will eventually twist both axles to snappage :P
I like the idea of how a detroit locker works, but im not sure how it'd react to drifting on the street or track ? maybe more suited to a car that only goes down the track but is street friven also ?
Biggest thing about spools is that (ON THE STREET) u never know where u'll be or wat u'll be doin when u break an axle. If u break an axle at the drags
1. ur goin in a straight line
2. hopefully u'll break it in the launch when ur not doin 100kph.
so its not that big a deal.

or police have really cracked down since I last had a Holden (back in 2000)
My VS SS (IRS) Shudders in low speed corners as well.. Exactly like a spool does..

20-04-06, 14:29 GMT+10#44 I'll take a shimmed up LSD any day.
My first VLT had a great diff, never single wheeled, the previous owner either looked after it or had it rebuilt.
This one has been ok, but definately needs to be rebuilt.
I have thought about a spool, but you're chasing your tail with axles, tyres, bushes, shocks etc. Would end up costing you the same as a rebuily factory LSD.

Thats a Detroit EZ Locker....appears to be similar to the Lokka that was in the group buy a while back (ie reuse your existing casing and replace the spider gears with the locker assembly).
Remember Detroit make a variety of products that are referred to as "Detroit Lockers", ranging from the basic stuff like EZ Locker up to full replacement centres.

20-04-06, 14:48 GMT+10#47 never had a problem with a spool.
1 year plus constant dialy driving.
You get used to the chirps n the looks @ servos hahaha
LSD is only good when theres the power there behind it.
My 2-c.

20-04-06, 18:37 GMT+10#48 how much would a detroit locker in a 9" housing with vl axel tubes, 3.5:1 gears, 31 spline summers brothers axels, disc to disc, rebuilt less than 1000kms ago be worth??

20-04-06, 19:28 GMT+10#49 Ive had tight lsds then eventually wore it out in my ss. my vlt sleeper has a mini spool and i love it. it doesnt get driven daily but when i drive it i do get the shudder. big deal. its predictable unlike lsd, and more importantly its lotsa fun!!
detroit or the kaaz diff is probably the way to go. at the end of the day you need to establish what the car will be used for and work your diff around that.

20-04-06, 20:39 GMT+10#50 mini spool in the summer months and take it out and use the lsd in the winter...car slides out way too easy in the winter with the spool, lots of round abouts in my area.

21-04-06, 00:31 GMT+10#51 personal opinion... spools are crap. LSD or Detroit Locker anyday.. LSD's last a long time if you know how to treat them properly... ie no dumping the clutch turning corners when theres more weight on 1 wheel than the other and no putting the boot down goin into left handers, this is the biggest killer of all. i had a spool in my old xy gt mockup and it just about shook the whole car to bits, dash was loose, console rattled apart, gearbox mounts etc etc... they are fun but become a pain in the ass after a while

23-04-06, 19:26 GMT+10#53 the detroit locker how it works is you only get differental action when going around a corner because the way it works is it replaces your spider gears and has the 2 axels splined into it but when you go around a corner the outside wheel has to spin faster this is were you spider gears would kick in allowing the wheels to spin at diiferent speeds this is were the spools fail cause the wheels are spinning at the same speed putting tones of load on the wheel on the outside of the courner causing the jumping, shudders and scrubbing out of the tyres.
with a detriot locker when going around a corner the locker will disengage the driving wheel due to the outside wheel spinning faster than the locker is its self alowing the power to be sent to the wheel on the inside of the corner.
when these wear out they make a clunking noise when going around a corner other than that there quiet.
now this is were the detroit lockers are better than lsd's when doing a burn out these will spin both wheels at the same speed alowing you to heat the tyres up equaly for better grip and the wheels will spin for as long as you want you could a burn out the entire length of your street and have both whhens spinning leving somthing to be proud of. now with a lsd you can leave a nice burn out but the lsd wont stay engaged for ever and sooner or later a wheel will grip transmitting all the power to that wheel and while ur doing this burnout your spider gears are screeming there little tittys off and getting very hot and can get so hot the spot weld the self together and cause theres still drive going to the gears rip that weld apart leeving damage to the grears or they will just seeze up.
the choice is up to you but lockers all the way for me

25-04-06, 13:17 GMT+10#55 I remember first putting a lok rite lokka into the rear of my patrol and it tramped terribly, it was leaf sprung which is prone to it, but i fixed it with big bore shockies and 35 inch muddies that are twice the weight compared to a 31 inch tyre. Instead of using 9 inches and the like why don't ppl use 4wd diffs? They are strong as hell, can get heaps of cheap lokka's for them detroit mak 4 or 5 different versions or you could go an air lokka, the diff ratios are low as mine is 4.6:1 as std and cruiser diffs i believe can get as low as 5.4:1 if you wanted a 60kph max speed.
On a commodore you shouldn't really get tramp due to suspension setup unless things are worn and crap shokkies.
