ollie you should know from your extensive gran turismo 4 play.... if not go and lock some diffs and find out!
but yes a DL equiped car will exhibit less understeer than a locker
yeah, as already pointed out, it lock with the SLIGHTEST hint of acceleration, so it is as predictable as a spool, no drama's there. only annoying thing is when you cruising do 100, and you are just on and off the throttle, the car want's to understeers a bit when the diff locks, but with good tyres on the front i have pretty much gotten rid of that as well. Very good things DL, as i didn't want a spool and LSD's suck... i get the benifit's of both this way! and it's legal!
Sorry guys I meant to say more predictable. Its great like that. It never unlocks when you don't want it to. Basically you coast around slow corners or accelerate out. It locks really early and stays there. I would take one over a full spool any day no questions. There are NO benefits of having a spool over a DL except price.
Its just a giant dog engagement between the side gears which locks by magic under torque/slip differential.
StuckyMcStcuk- My mate works at ARB and I believe you can get Borg warner air locker centres. You need to run lines from your diff centre to a tank and just pump it up at the servo. Or you can run an on-board compressor like the 4wd boys
Not to sound like a dumb ****, but how do they actually work? Im familiar with mini spools and full spools which in effect create 1 axle but how do these D/L work? What is the mechanical component that creates the locking effect?

A DL is good because it will in theory aid turn in under decel, and will not wear out like a LSD will.
But they can be hard to drive in the wet when you are at max cornering and you have to lift off throttle completely (because you have gone in a little too fast), they can unload and catch u out, happened to my brother once, but its been in for a few years.
I have ditched my minispool for an LSD centre lately, the std BW LSD's have approx. 50lbs break away (waste of time for any use), mine was modified and set up to have 400lbs break away, It was very similar to drive (no aid in turn in for my set up) but by the end of the weekend it was slipping out of the hairpin, sweeper and through every turn of the Esses, causing my lap times to be .5 - .8 seconds of my best. i am hoping he can get it to 600lbs break away, then i will see how it goes.
Spools are amazing for circuit, just change bar and toe settings and its all good.
I don't think its unlocking grant. The way the detroit works is when its under power the teeth pull themselves together so it can't get away to unlock. More likely the backlash between the dog teeth is enough to let one wheel tramp relative to the other.
im thinking about putting a detroit locker or full spool in mine, just seem to be breaking too many axles. currently have 9 inch with 28 spline axles and mini spool.

That's great, but this thread is 4 years old!
