16-03-05, 20:49 GMT+10#41 Hey everyone, quick update. I went to the exhaust shop today and the guy there said I should keep my single 2.5" thats already on there.
He said if I go any bigger that it will screw the back pressure. Also that twin systems dont work too well on VL because of the necessary shape they need to be.

Cheapest mod Ive ever made!
Now its time to start tracking down the diff!

17-03-05, 07:50 GMT+10#42 VN Heads, Dual Plane Manifold, Crane 286 cam.. the lsit goes on and on.. that cam is only little but will keep it streetable.. i have a feeling you'll have to change the gear ratio to compete with the extra torque he is making from the extra cubes that crank has bought about..

17-03-05, 13:00 GMT+10#43 i think the cam and head job is a good idea lololol

hey epitaph, I've used the wade 325c cam a few times, which is almost identical to the 286 crane, it has good street manners and ok vacuum, on a 304 VS ute with mild head work, it made 198 kw @wheels. 13.9 1/4 mile. not real quick, but from 137kw to 197kw @wheels for about $1900

19-03-05, 12:04 GMT+10#45 bro I think your best bet powerwise would be just the simple mods first, like headers, manifold, carby and ignition... with spending next to no cash for the power gains I think this is the best road for you to go down, for now anyway..
Later on look at things like ratios, if you just want hard acceleration go a t5 with 3.9's, also sets a good platform for future mods

20-03-05, 10:08 GMT+10#46 well im about to put vn heads, bigger cam and a dual plane harrop manifold on mine, its an otherwise pretty stock 308 bottom end.. but it will be a completely new car when this stuff is all fitted and running. the efi cars were 165kw from factory, it was the heads that made the 50kw jump in power... combined with a cam, twin throttle gas system and and the dual plane she should hit 200-220kw in a featherweight VC commo... i cant wait
then of course theres the trimatic problem

11-04-05, 16:47 GMT+10#52 Stable: mate the first thing you need to do is piss off that trimatic, which I would have to rate as THE WORST box for a daily street commodore, with its crapy 2.35:1 1st, 1.45:1 2nd and no overdrive - come on time for an upgrade.
Personally i'd go for the t-5 but sounds like you want to keep it auto (which is fine) so i'd be organising to get your hands on a rooted VN-VP V8 TH700 and rebuild it with tougher internals and a shift kit. Then I'd be looking at a 3.45/3.73 equiped LSD for the diff, AFTER this you can start thinking about what you want to do with the motor be it carby 5L/5.7L, EFI 5L/5.7L, supercharged carby/EFI whatever, but for now the gains you'll get for the money in trans and diff mods far outclass engine mods easily.
Think of it like this
a VL 5L with a trimatic would need 4.11s in the diff to match the acceleration of the same car with a TH700 in 1st gear
&
a VL 5L with a trimatic would need 3.55s in the diff to match the acceleration of the same car with a TH700 in 2nd gear
and thats just with the TH700! when you put in 3.45s or 3.73s in rear you'll be quicker again while still cruising on the highway at less rpm than the trimatic with 3.08 in the diff!
trimatic with 3.08diff @ 100km/hr = 2560rpm
TH700 with 3.08diff @ 100km/hr = 1822rpm
TH700 with 3.45diff @ 100km/hr = 2040rpm
TH700 with 3.73diff @ 100km/hr = 2200rpm

11-04-05, 17:17 GMT+10#53 yeah the overdrive is good but apparantly its the weakest of all turbo boxes and not to mention the most expensive to rebuild by far..

lots and lots of people out there running the 700s and as long as you keep em cool i can't see how a stock or near stock VL 5L is genna eat one (without manually dropping gears for engine braking and the like that is)
and as for rebuilds all 4sp autos cost a fair amount to do

14-04-05, 19:32 GMT+10#55 hey instinct, Why r u suggesting to him to part with about $3k(buying "rooted" T700, labour/parts, diff/gears/lsd) and to pretty much acheive nothing? There's nothing wrong with the trimatic for street/mild use. Considering the T700 is twice the size, he's gonna lose power going thru it. with stable's car the way it is 100kph @ 2700 rpm (3.08:1 ratio and trimatic) ur suggesting T700 with 3.7 which is 100kph @ 2450 rpm (where did u get 2200rpm from?). Spending $3K to drop ur revs about 250 rpm @ 100kph, and to lose a bit of power? Stable was asking for cheap power increases for now.

15-04-05, 14:19 GMT+10#57 my plan is to drop a VT roller 355 stroker in my calais and convert back to carby
currently i have an NA 6...
what exactly do i need to change / convert to do this?
And typically, how much money am i looking at??

if u go new, them motors are worth like 6500, then u can sell off the banana manifold and just get a harrop manifold then the carby, another 1500 or so for them two....

if you read my post in its entirety youll soon see why I suggested the TH700
but just for you Ill outline the two main points again
1. the TH700s ratios would make for a faster accelerating car verses the trimatic
2. the TH700s overdrive would allow for shorter diff gears (making the car accelerate faster again) while still retaining good highway rpms.

the power loss wouldn't even be noticeable considering how much harder the car would go because of better gearing

dunno what formula your using but just in case mine was incorrect i went out for a ride in a mates VN calais with a TH700 and 3.73s in the diff today to clear this up and guess what - it was revin at just over 2200rpm@100km/hr.
There is a reason why holden ditched the trimatic and picked up the TH700... maybe you should catch on

i have ask why the hell you'd want to do that!?
i have the VT roller stroker in my VL (still EFI) and i love it
why buy an injected motor just to pull it apart and make it carby, just build your own carby stroker
