IDE cables do not work once they get longer than a certain point. i dont know the exact length, but its not much longer than the standard one inside your computer right now, probably around 3ft is the max.
a computer? your CD drives wont be protected against bumps, the cd can come off the motor and jam the drive, hardrives wont last long in bumpy conditions (if you get the cables to work).
whats the point putting a 2-3k computer in a car when its the size of a computer, when you can spend 3k on a dvd head unit that does the same thing.

You're right about the IDE lengths, but half a metre should be fine - if not SCSI would be sweet. Although if I was going to use a PC/Laptop, I'd get a USB2 external CD/DVD player. but didn't i mention XBOX!
You don't play DVD's while you're driving (generally) so the DVD's won't get jammed, and use a 2.25" 4500 RMP laptop harddrive and you're sweet.

That's why you spent $400 and get a modded xbox which is a DVD player, Movie 'archiver', MP3 playlists, and HEAPS HEAPS HEAPS more! Once again, with a laptop HDD which is designed for the bumps, slower RPM's.
Getting off the topic though.
The whole VL Dash replacement idea seemed to die down quickly. Surely somebody here has either recovered / restyled their VL dash. Want to steal your ideas!
go with the VS dash mate looks good, you have to shave something of the side though i cant remember the instructions very well but i remember the guy did alot of shaving to get it to fit but looked very nice better than the above pick because the dash wasnt overboard.

Thank you very much Cletus - very helpful.
Defiantly helps narrowing down the search of what's realistically possible - and what's not.
I'm going for the clean simple look, and that's the VS.
Cheers ears.

I have a monthly car budget, I'm an IT manager, and also own an IT programming company - I'm loaded! LOL. I don't have a life basically, spend my time working at work, or at home, or on the Holden!
My VL is currently off the road, I work on it 4 -5 days a week, and slowly plod through things. Do everything myself as I used to own a mechanics business and picked up a wide variety of skills. Jack Of all Trades, Master of IT. I like to do things well, so if it means the car is going to be off the road for another month so I can make sure everything is up to scratch, then so be it.

You talking to me?
Because I didn't say anything was wrong with what you said - quite the opposite. I was agreeing with you.
I know this is Marbo's Thread, but it just so happens to inline with what I'm thinking of doing.
Cheers for the input.

i am thinking about buying all after market gauges wait to get a price back on them but should i get a mech or digital speedo,
these are the ones i asked for:
speedo (digi)
water (digi)
oil pres (digi)
fuel (digi)
volt(digi)
boost/vac (mech)
air/fuel (digi)
doe that sound all right ? or should some be mech and sum digi?
Unfortunately VL was the last of the cable speedos.
Since your using an aftermarket comp you could use VN temp sensor and use a jaycar kit to recalibrate the tacho with the VN gauges.
The pic below is the back of a VS gauge cluster, Vn's are almost identical. It's all wires here.

This site works a treat because everyone can speak their opinions without being belittled. You can express yourself through your car and ideas, and other ideas can be nutured and grow while learning what works, and doesn't work. 90% of the fun is building your ideas, and watching them come to life.
My own thoughts and opinions have changed in certain cases, due to the input of people on this site.
It's all fair and good putting up a post saying you don't like something.
Personally I would be interested in seeing a VL with a modern dash, as my interior isn't stock anyway.
Good luck with your project Marmo. That Pic looks kinda like a VT or VX - not too sure though.
My appologies for my rambling.
i agree with you mate, thats why i want to put a cannon muffler on mine, besides, itll be hidden behind the bodykit so yeh, as for MARMO, do what you want

The VL dash conversion has been done many times, I've seen Vn,VS,VT and that VY SS dash in the green VL.
I have also done a VS dash conversion into a VB, the work involved is similar to a VL.
This is an old pic from 3 years ago, the dash is fully functional and so are the switches. Before anyone asks, yes it's hard to do, if you havent much hands on exp dont bother. I had a guide on my old website on how to fit the VS dash but theiving cvnts kept taking credit for my hard work so it's no longer for public viewing.
PS: a VT dash in a VL looks completely wrong, it has all the wrong curves a VY dash looks better when its done properly (looks factory, like it's ment to be there)
Yes your the fella i mentioned earlier in the post, the one who took the instructions down cause others were taking credit for it.
Love the *** dash

nice job on the VS dash jaws, where did you get the speedo converter exactly? was there much to rigin it up? i am thinking of doing up something similar to what you have, but it would be a bit more custom i think.
hey are you the same jaws that did the head port and polish from the v-comm forums?? if so i was looking at it the other day, bloody nice job!!

I didn't have to use one as I used the full VS V6 running gear.
Castlemaine rod shop and phoenix mechanical (adelaide) sell the converter boxes. They cost around $80 i think. They are simple to wire up, only a few wires.
And yes that was me who did the head porting.

Yes that would be one of the problems.
