prove wat?.......the car does mid 14's, why?. is it that hard to believe...... well any way went to willowbank last night and run 14.7 @94mph. had traction issue's and bad axle hop. and then when i got traction i had no clutch by 3rd gear, so i'm go to get the clutch done and try again. btw got 19 runs in, not that many there...

The Manuals will always be more superior, You lose around 35% power through the auto, and about haf that through the manual. So in the end the manual will be putting out more power then the auto to the ground (which is what counts in the end yeah?) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

yeah we are talking about stocky slush vl auto's compaired to 5 speeds... you are talknig about a tricked up turbo 400 or coarse it would shift harder/quicker.... but you would need more power the 5 speed would get more power to the ground.. a stock na 5 speed against a stock na with ur turbo 400...the 5 speed would still win as the turbo 400 would suck more power i think... maybe

"However, a V6 and TH400 is not the best combination, as 12-17% of the engine's power is consumed just to run the transmission." quote from http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/th400.htm . i know the vl isnt a v6 but i guess it would still suffer from powerloss.

Next year when I get some money behind me after rego, unpaid christmas holidays (casual worker) I want to chase up a Skyline R32 - R33 RB20DET 5 speed because mine is on its way out. First I suspected it was to do with the clutch linkages, etc in the clutch pedal being worn out,but I fixed that and had troubles with clashing between gears changing up from 1st to 2nd and down from 3rd to 2nd. At the moment I have added some Nulon additive which reduces clashing by filling in the void caused by wear in the synchro cones, this has led to a smoother shifting gearbox,I drained the 50/50 mix of auto trans fluid and 80W90 diff oil out and filled it up with Valvoline 75W90 manual transmission fluid, brass wear particles were evident in the old fluid (from the synchro cones). I have to take it easier now and not put my foot down too hard when taking off as the rear bush inside the box is worn and this causes the propeller shaft to vibrate, particularly under extreme loads (I can move the yoke inside the bush). The box has a gear noise in overdrive which has been there for a year now,it was faintly evident when it was behind the single cam motor but the vast torque increase (about 20 per cent) of the twin cam motor, has made the noise more apparent because it almost feels like the old motor did when pulling up a hill in 4th, only I am doing this in overdrive. Note the Skyline box I am told has a better shift quality in 1st & 2nd due to the dual synchros in those gears.

Had the same problem with the syncro going down gears from 3rd to 2nd was almost impossible without crunching (or coming to a complete stop..then changing) But the current box i have now is doing quite good, i also put some additive into it which is supposed to make gear changes smoother, and i have noticed once it has heated up alot in summer makes it better too With my VL now i have some bearing noise (im assuming front gearbox bearing) because engaging the clutch makes the noise stop. Other than that and some release bearing noise, no probs. Cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I also have a noise at the rear of my box. Had it looked at and apparently there's a couple of gears at the back relating to 5th and reverse that spin no matter what gear you are in or if you are stationary or moving. Only time it isn't there is when the clutch is in. I was told these gears get chipped when a driver tries to go to reverse and the car is still moving forward, it grinds the gears and chips the teeth, ending up with the noise which is the chipped teeth contacting each other. I noticed this when I first checked the car and the owner said it had been like that for about 2.5 years after being rebuilt 3 years ago, he took it back and was told not to worry, which I was also told, although there's no saying when it will go completely. Hopefully I'll get to do my tailsahft bearing over Christmas so I'll drain the box, put fresh oil in and try some of the nulon stuff, or even Lucas oil stabiliser as Jet-6 has used and said it helped his box quite a bit.

well i just blew up my R32 auto box, 1st lost reverse then lost 4th n 3rd, so manuals going in now as we speak! im getting a lightened flywheel down from 9kg's to 2.5 so thats sweet n a HD clutch... then for a FMIC then its up for sale! but it was good fun in the auto i couldnt cherp off the line to save my life but when it got to about 80 it kicked sideways due to bigger n highflowed turbo, oh well ill have more power should get around 160 rwkw's after the manual then after fmic n other small mods 210 =D

Everyone tells me that my 5spd is rare but when i look in the trading post every 2nd vl has a 5spd. I dunno. I didn't look around all that much. I was looking at VKs and VHs to buy, then came across this one VL 5spd wagon and knew that was the car for me. 4 years later i've rebuilt the box and the clutch but that's to be expected when the car has 386 000 ks on it. Still goin strong, they don't make em like they used to he he

i have a calais turbo manual and i had an n/a auto bt1 before, the thing that makes the vlct better the most over the bt1 isnt that its turbo or a calais, but that its manual Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

thanks bexter84, is that redlining or what?, does second have any power lower in the revs. Thanks

Second for me was always fairly dead below 3 grand.. about 2 and a half you could feel it coming on fairly strong, but basically if you left it half throttle and then planted it when it got to 3k it was usually better. Mind you I hadn't done any timing increase or anything. And yes, redlining.. When I did hit the limiter I'm sure it was about 120ish.. But who knows with inaccurate speedo's
