I changed mine drums to discs, Just popped out the barrings and pressed in new ones just to be sure, all new seals, change the handbrake cable, no play at all. same axels. Not very difficult to do. Bleeding the brake was hard as you needed another person pumping the pedal Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i have also done a conversion from vl drums to vn disks and i had to change the bearings and seals to the disk brake ones(cost = $100). as for the hand brake cable i just used the vl drum hand brake cable.

bump.. im looking into converting my drum rear end to disc set up my understanding is... i will need rotors, calipers , backing plate, vl disc brake handbrake? ( do i need the handbrake cable or can i use the drum one? ) and i can use my axles if i get a disc brake seal kit? is this correct? if not , could someone inform me on what is also, somebody mentioned a 3mm lip? do i need to grind this off ? thanks

I did this conversion on my VL years ago. The drum diffs on VLs have the 3mm lip (disc diffs on VLs dont have the lip. that why you cant swap them across-otherwise you'll have the axle 'play').. You have to use the VN stuff because they fit over the lip. You DONT have to change the master cylinder when doing this conversion!

hmm, i never wanted to use the VN setup because people have problems setting up the handbrake because it is the opposite on Vn's. But might think about doing it if you have play with the VL stuff. I thought the play only happened if you didnt change to disc type bearings? might have to source a VN setup now. how have people setup the handbrake cable on VN setups?

I had a drum VL housing and fitted complete VP rear discs, Bought new disc brake spec wheel bearings (thicker seals), a new handbrake cable to suit a VL with rear discs and a rear disc spec master cylinder. It all works fine. The only difference is I think the VL and VN have the levers in a different spot where they poke through the backing plate- one is at the top and one at the bottom?

I got someone to do the rear bearings as they need to be pressed on. I cant really remember, might take an 2 hourS or so, its only 4 bolts per side for the backing plate, slide in the axles, slipon the disc and bolt the caliper on.

Did the conversion last night using VLT backing plates, calipers and rotors. Ground the 3mm lip off each end of the drum housing and theres now very little play in the axles. Is it absolutely necessary to use disc brake axle seals and bearings? As mine seems to bolt up just fine. Only issue Im having is putting the damn handbrake gear in! Anyone got a step-by-step order in which its done?
